Hi all, can someone share the details for the aircon fan mod on a p38.

Been running around without a viscous fan for months, now time to tow the caravan so, either a new viscous or do this mod.

Oh and I've messaged datatek asking for the info.

If you are towing a caravan put the viscous fan back on.
 
Or install electric fan on rad?

Not when you are using aircon they aren't, as i said put the viscous fan back on. An electric fan fitted to back of radiator only draws air through a restricted area. The vicous fan draws air through the whole rad area because of the shroud. Later models (1999 on) have a black temp sensor on the head that brings on the aircon fans to assist the viscous in cooling if a certain over temp is reached. This helps when sitting in traffic after heavy load conditions to remove latent heat at low engine RPMs with no dynamic airflow through the rad. Blowing hot air from the aircon condenser through the rad with the engine under load towing a caravan in summer without assistance from the viscous and expecting it to cool the system is a rather fanciful thought. Others may disagree but those are my thought on the matter.

Likewise I have done some heavy towing, a P38 on a trailer, mid twenties C on the hilly twisties through France, no problem.

Why when there are 2 perfectly good powerful fans already there if the car has aircon? Millions of powerful FWD/4WD vehicles run with just electric fans of similar output without a problem.

No different to the viscous drawing hot air from the condenser through the RAD, the aircon fans rarely run normally, in fact the never ran on mine even though I use the aircon all the time because of a wiring fault.
With the cowl & viscous removed, there is enough airflow above about 30mph to need no fan.

Why when there are 2 perfectly good powerful fans already there if the car has aircon? Millions of powerful FWD/4WD vehicles run with just electric fans of similar output without a problem.

In case you get a wiring fault and the fans fail? :)
 
I've your cooling system is up to scratch I can't see where the problem is but an electric fan on a separate switch seems to be the way to go I had an old 3300 daf years ago that had one fitted and every time I went up a long hill I had to rember to hit the switch but there was a problem with the cooling system

With a stat, you don't have to remember to hit a switch:)
 
This is a super mod'. I did it on my p38 as per Datatek advise....maybe 5-6 yrs ago.
All is fine...Sold it to a mate of mine and is still all fine.
A great and simple idea..

There is a guy in New Zealand where it can get pretty hot running a P38 with the 3 litre M57 engine. He also runs without a viscous fan, it was fine except for heavy towing. A radiator upgrade fixed that.
