Hi Guys,
I have recently bought a 1997 p38. The srs light is on on the dash and it says "Airbag Fault" any ideas what this could be as I have been advised my my local MOT place that as of last week, any vehicle showing lights warning lights on the dash will automatically fail the MOT so need to get the problem sorted before my current MOT expires. Can anyone help with what they think it could be and prices? thanks

Luke

First up unfortunatly would be to get it on Diagnostics and see what fault Code(s) are stored, most faults with the SRS system will need to be reset using a Diagnostics Device in anycase, even if you could effect a repair yourself - it may still need to go and be reset anyway!

Your guy is right, it will fail the MOT with the SRS lamp illuminated.

If it was post 1999 model, I would have said look under the seats for the yellow connector as these have been known to give issues...but 1997 didn't have side airbags in the seats so it won't be that...

More commonly on the earlier models is the Rotary Coupler under the steering wheel, or someone has unplgged the yellow harnes connector to the instrument panel without disconnecting the battery first....

Diagnostics to pull fault codes I am afraid...but Rotary Coupler is a common fail item!

Could also be unplugged behind the glovebox if the previous owner had a child seat there. Just like mine was. Plugged it back in and warning was gone.

Low battery volts will also sometimes trigger an SRS fault but it's still diagnostics I'm afraid.

Could also be one of the two SRS bulbs blown. If first bulb fails other will come on permanently.

Sorry Saint.V8 I am fairly new to this site but thank you I did acknowledge your reply about the diagnostic. :)
:D - Welcome LZ is not your typical forum, loads of banter and p!ss taking...but the wealth of info available is second to none...!!!

In almost two years my SRS light (1995 model) has come on twice - both times I have reset it with my nanocom and it hasn't come back. So if you are lucky it could just be a glitch...

Either way as others have said, you need to start by hooking it up to some sort of diagnostics that is capable of reading and resetting the fault.

HTH

Cheers

Hello mate, I live in Colchester, have you had this problem with you airbags then? is it easy to fix?

My airbag warning light, comes on if the battery voltage gets low, when the starter motor drags the battery voltage down while starting the system throws a hizzy fit at times. I have to take the motor for a long run and turn off the warning, this is on my vehicle.

All of the other members posts are also valid possibilities, so it a matter of diagnostics.

I'm travelling home later today, when's your MOT due?

Next weekend would be good light and time wise, but one evening this week could be a slim possibility depending on what time your around at home or do you work near me?

Is the SRS light flashing all the time or does it stay on as a solid light?
