Hey guys

I’ve bought an 04 disco for the wife as her old one blew its gearbox.

Just converting back to air suspension as it’s been put on coils.

I’ve fitted one sides air bag but it won’t inflate. I’ve manually tested the compressor by jumping the relay and it does work.

Now the other side is still on a coil, with the air line blanked off. I’ve checked it’s on “air setting” with the nanocom and there’s no faults recorded.

Would the other airline being blanked prevent the system from activating? I don’t want to remove the other side to have the vehicle stuck and not drives me till I can get parts.

Any help, graciously received :)
 
What does nanocom say the height sensor on that side is reading? Does switching it to coils and back to air wipe out the stored target settings? Just thinking that if the target height is zero, then the SLS thinks it's already there and won't bother pumping it up...
 
On the nanocom in the stored settings it’s empty?

I’ll try making some settings up ( the side which is still on a coil reads 170) so I’ll bang that in and see what happens.
 
That was definitely part of it. It’s scyuvating now but it’s unable to get past barely lifted up at all. 60 in the level setting.

Perhaps the compressor is knackered and that’s why the previous owner went to a coil conversion

If you think its the compressor could just be the seals etc, search ebay for discovery 2 air compressor repair kit, about 25 quid I think.
 
aye id ordered one on the saturday. theres another company doing the same kit for £13.95 now (is it noticable how tight i am?!)
ive also ordered a set of schraded valves and fittings so i can manually pump it up in the event of failure.

Itll be good to have it on air, they ride so much better than coil springs!

anyone after a coil spring conversion? :D

I'm no expert either but there's lots on here about SLS and sure it says you need both bags and the leveling sensors on to get it to go properly
 
ive ordered the bits anyhoo. I noted both rear bump stops were missing too so ive got the whole shebang on order.
Level sensors were of course already there ;) and tested to be working correctly.

I used the compressor repair kit on mine - changed the piston ring, dessicant and air intake filter. It worked well for a while till the compressor stopped working altogether. I guess the motor had already been on its way out. After changing airbags, bumpstops and height sensors as well, I had had enough and changed to coils. There was no nooticeable difference in the ride at all. Just no more problems.

I'd have to disagree ;) I notice quite a difference between coils and air, and will be changing my new one back over to air.
Mainly for the towing though, to watch it self level 3.5 tons really is something special :p
But understandable when it keeps breaking..
 
I too am an advocate of air suspension, Ill be converting my 130 to air when i get it back on the road.

Going from air suspension to coil springs is like telling your wife "Lets go to Butlins this year"
 
+ 3 for air suspension, air is considerably better than coils and they ride much better when fully loaded on air with self levelling. I'm surprised you bought one on coils to convert back though, why did you not just buy one still on air?

I bought mine on coils simply because I liked everything else about it, including working ACE. Adding air suspension isn't really a big job anyway, and already have Hawkeye to turn it back on.
And still have my old crashed disco to get the pump off etc
 
The self-levelling feature is handy for towing but if you are not towing then you would find it hard to guess that coils were fitted. Now we don't have the horse trailer and the caravan is sited in Spain we don't need to tow. In fact I try to persuade my wife to get rid of the disco and get a standard 2 wheel drive car. She is reluctant though - she is attached to the disco.
 
The first disco I bought was on springs so I never knew any different, when I got my second which was still on air I couldn't believe how nice the ride quality was, and thats without towing, I just prefer to fix things rather than bin them :p

It’s a 2004 in black, manual and was supposed to be on air but they had fitted a coil conversion kit.

Gave £1000 for it 2 days before Xmas. Bargain!!!

Just fitted all the kit and the air systems now working perfectly. Rides sssooooo much better.

Cost for the 2 new air bags, compressor rebuild kit, bypass valves and new bump stops - £101.50
 
Brilliant, well done. Nice to see someone converting back. I never understood this phobia some have with the air suspension when it is such a simple system.
 
I know, it’s 2 bags of air, done solenoids, transducers and a pump (pretty much)

Not rocket science
 
Hmm not quite working right. The right hand bag was very slow to level and now doesn’t seem to be getting air at all. I’ve pumped it up manually and disconnected the air system. In diagnostic mode I’m trying to send air through the air line but not getting any on the right.

I suspect the solenoid is knackered or the small air line between the compressor and the solenoid has failed, When pumped up manuallybabd still connected it held air but when switched off would do the slight drop it’s supposed to do, then not pump back up
