You could try shorting across the solenoid to see if the starter works.
Might rule out an ignition switch problem or not.
 
Hi I wasn't sure how to try it on the bench really. Do I just add 12v and stand back or does it use more power from the Coil etc?

To test the starter you have connect jump leads to the starter,negative from starter body to battery negative, Positive from the terminal on the starter and then just touch the positive terminal on the battery with the other end. Motor will jump into life if good. Take care and DO NOT mess with the coil which has nothing to do with the starter motor but can deliver very powerfull shocks.
 
Hi thanks I have given that a try and no signs of life at all from starter so I've ordered a new one to try next. Thanks again for the help
