Morning All,
I'm having trouble purging air from the fuel system on the 300TDi in my pre-Defender 90 after fitting a new sender unit in the tank. Have replaced all hoses, remade joints in the fuel circuit and installed new lift pump. Priming the filter bowl by hand takes forever. The engine starts and runs OK if I crack open the bleed screw on the filter but runs roughly and stalls if its nipped up.
I've heard that the 300 is self purging. Can anyone confirm? This may be a daft question but when I checked the new pump output with clear hose it seemed to be pushing out slugs of air with the fuel. This isn't right, surely?
The old pump also does the same.

They certainly are self bleeding, I recently did an engine swap including injector pump, injectors and high pressure pipes and mine started without purging the air out. Maybe you have a small air leak in your pick up hose in the tank. Try putting some clear hose on to find where abouts the air is getting in

The pick up pipe from the tank is the type which is integral with the sender unit - this is new. The hose from that to the lift pump is one continuous length of braided rubber. This is new and a tight push fit over the pipes at each end - clamped with hose clips not jubilee clips.
I suppose its possible that there could still be an air leak from either end and the clear hose would confirm that - that would also of course show up on the outlet side of the pump. Not very likely but I suppose possible is there being a pinhole in the new Britpart sender unit!
 
Personally I wouldn't trust anything that comes in a blue bag and I certainly wouldn't be surprised if there were a problem with it
 
Well Marmaduke you were spot-on :) Twas indeed the new Britpart sender unit adding copious amounts of air into the pick-up pipe. Most likely a leaky attachment of the sensor to the pipe. Trouble is there doesn't seem to be anything in the way of an alternative source - all the other suppliers have what looks remarkably like the same thing. Just pot luck as to whether you get one that works I guess. Thanks for your input.

200 & 300 tdi's are the easiest things in the world to bleed after a tank,filter, what ever change ! So you must have a faulty connection some where that's pulling in air !
 
Yes, thanks Jason. Not a faulty connection as such but a faulty new Britpart fuel level unit which was allowing large amounts of air into the fuel pick-up pipe. Problem solved by re-installing the old fuel level unit pro temps.
 
Send it back for a refund, only way companies will stop selling poor quality products (hopefully) is if it costs them money.
