Whilst playing around with the parts for my s3 rebuild I was moving the air filter when I poured oil all down my trousers. Is the air filter meant to have oil in it? Its an air filter not an oil filter for god sake! :p

Oooops, Don't forget to top it up again. If you didn't know there should be oil there it prabably wants cleaning anyway!
How far have you got with the rebuild?

Ah haa. I seen now, is it designed to collect the dust not trapped by the filters before it enters the engine? Ok as far as the rebuild is going: new rear spring bushed, wiring labled, chassis painted, wheels painted, engine in, cab on, started breaks but require new parts due to nipps snapping. I have also realised that 3 out of 5 ports on my spliter valve have slightly larger union holes than on the pipes supplied with my brake pipe kit. They are the same size thread as used on early defenders and series 3 clutch's (pipe coming out of master cylindar). Unfortunately the pipe is slightly larger so that union is of no use. If you know the union size or where to get it from please contact me or reply to the thread. (by the way, how much oil is required in the air filter??)

Wash with dissell inside of "POT" for oil in filter and you will be able to see marker (HI/LOW) but I think about 1.5 - 2 lit. (CAN GO ANY OIL - like SAE 30)

Was good also UPER PART (metal net, push it in larger can with dissel to reduce dust boiled with oil INSIDE)...

:D :D :D

I have just replaced the master cylinder and pipes on my series 3, which has the duel system and servo. I found that the union holes on the new genuine type master cylinder were of different size to the one that I had taken off.
This is strange as the part has never superseeded to any other part number!

I'm sure that all of the brake pipe sizes are supposed to be the same size which is 3/16 and the top two ports on the valve should be the same two sizes as on the master cylinder. One port larger - One port smaller. When connecting them, the larger master cylinder port connects to the smaller brake failure valve port. The smaller master cyl. port then connects to the larger brake failure valve port.
This is now the case on my rebuild so I hope it's right!!!

For some reason mine is different to that, I have no idea why. 1983, I don't know if that is of any signifocance

Yep 1980 there was a change. I could probably find out if you still need to know as they (master cyl.) are stocked where I work and easy to measure! I'm not sure If the pipes are here though.

I got rid of the oil bath air filter on my Series 3 2.25 Diesel and replaced it with a K & N paper one from Paddocks, doddle to fit about £30, lifetime guarantee and does away with the party 7 tin and the hose. gives you more room in the engine bay, runs better and more power.

there was two different brake unions used. imperial on the earlier ones and metric on tit later ones. dunno when the change was made. i think the dimensions of the components are the same, its just the thread that is different. so it is possible that someone may have had a knackered imp/metric and replaced it with a good metric/imp cylinder. when i did me front axle i had 10inch brakes on one side and 11 on the other so don't dismiss the enginuity or any PO's. when it comes to what should be fitted and what is fitted.

My 5 port valve has 2 metric (m11s' - cheers Slob) and 3 other ports (i only have 1 knackered union for this size) which appear to be imperial as the thread is different to those on m11s. My S3 is one of the earley lwb hi caps 1983.

Can this air filter be changed for a paper one as it seems to add a hell of a lot to engine noise. and i think a paper one could save a bit fuel too.

Older vehicles used UNF threads and Imperial sized pipes. Newer vehicles used metric threads. Whats probably happened over the years parts have been replaced with newer metric sized replacements. Hope this helps BB
