Just wondering do people leave the foam/cotton around the outside of the filter or do they remove it? What is it's exact purpose?

Just going to fit a new one soon and wondered if it was very restrictive and if I needed it at all.

I personally don't think is restricting at all, seems quite fluffy. You will not gain any performance by removing it. Not 1hp

I have tried both and saw / felt no difference in performance on my 2006 TD4.

Ok thats quite interesting, I didn't know what the purpose of the foam/cotton whatever it is actually was.

Extra filtration I guess, although not much dirt gets there to be honest.

I remove it myself.

It stops large amounts of sand from clogging the filter paper.

I did a vacuum flow test on a small sample, and it does cause a slight restriction.
