Hi there
We are wondering why there is an open vent at the bottom of our Defenders air filter. I think it’s a Wolf/Donaldson filter

We were wondering if the vent was to draw air in so we are totally wrong! What stops dust and muck going into the turbo?

As far as I know, it's still on the "outside" of the filter element so it shouldn't cause the scenario that you're concerned about.
Is it item 3 on the drawing?

I don’t think I am explaining myself very well sorry-the vent I am talking about is the in-numbered part within the box pointing directly downwards-the line then points down to the jubilee clip and a whole section of hoses and clips-we are missing this whole section for some reason

So, the whole of the pipework from the inner wing, where it's supposed to be attached to a grille there, to the air filter box, is missing?

So what I said then?

That means your sucking air in from the engine bay, rather than from outside your wing. The air going in that hole still has to go through the air filter, so nothing is going to get to your turbo or engine. The duct work will help deter water and spray getting direct access to the filter and help you get cooler air from outside. Worth a trip to a scrap yard to see if you can get that section. It's the sort of thing can can be expensive new, but I don't know for sure.
