Do I need it???

Had the 90 in for a check over and discovered the air filter meter is goosed. Mechanic unplugged it and the performance of the engine increased massively.
Is it worthwhile getting it fixed or can I realistically wait till the next service is due?

2006 TD5 90.

I presume you mean the air flow meter.

in which case, yes change it, unplugging wont cause any harm, it will just revert to preset values, and hamper performance.
the "increase" you feel is probably due to it failing and feeding incorrect values to the ECU, the default setting will have been an improvement, but not 100%.
not sure if it affects anything else on a TD5, some vehicles default to a full set of parameters, and you end up without full boost.
 
Thinking about this more. I'm going to remove the air filter and re-fix the air flow meter. This should tell me if there is a fault in the meter or if the filter is clogged...
 
If its running ok with the MAF disconnected then it's Deffo the MAF that's failed, it won't be the air filter.

Personally I'd get it changed asap, you'll use more fuel with it disconnected.
 
Is it a hot wire or flap type? Is it worth looking at the internals to see if it can be cleaned?
 
Filter itself looks fine (Flat type) So yeah, I believe it to be the MAF. Can anyone recommend a brand? Have seen various prices. Don't want to buy a dud....

Been through this.

If the MAFF is a flap type (look inside, it will be obvious) it may just be sticking a bit and a clean could fix it.

If its a hot wire type, some carb cleaner may improve it for a while, but it is going to need replacing soon.

You may or may not get a fault code - depends how bad it is.

You can also use a voltmeter (analogue type) to see what signal it is putting out. The numbers can be found on the net.
