Took my FL1 Pre-Facelift Td4 to a trusted garage to sort a knocking on drivers side engine. I thought it was crankshaft pulley or tensioners but it was the air con compressor. He said he has disconnected it and he took the newly fitted belt off.
I have 3 questions I need help with:
1. I’m not bothered about having air con as it would cost hundreds to fix, but is their an advantage (mpg) or any disadvantages to not having the compressor working?
2. The button is still illuminating when I push it? Should I remove the fuse or not bother.
3. Is it possible and would their be any advantage (weight saving) in physically removing the compressor?
 
Yes. In order to fix I would have to travel to another town to get de-gassed then back to my garage to have a new u it fitted and then back to another town to be re-gassed. That’s why the mechanic disconnected it as he knows that I don’t have hundreds to spend in a non vital element to the car.
 
I know but if there was a tangible advantage to removing it then I would go with that initial cost.
I was wondering if there were any advantages/ disadvantages anyone could think of as to not having the unit working. What I mean by that is will their be more or less ware on any other engine components as the crankshaft pulley only has one belt to drive now instead of two.
 
Turn the end of the compressor by hand and seen if the bearing is bad. This can be easily changed without taking gas out for a few quid.

If I didn't need the air con then I would leave it fitted but unplug the compressor clutch feed on the compressor. If you don't it will be energised all the time the car is on demist on the heater.

Picked it up for me and they know a lot less about cars than I do so I will ask the mechanic when I take it back in next week for more work. In the mean time I will look to see if there are any fuses I can remove and I’ll look to see if the clutch feed is still connected.

Where is the compressor clutch feed? Is it one of the wires in the pictures? IMG_7554.jpegIMG_7555.jpeg
 
Hi

If you don’t use air con, the seals will get dry, the gaz will go away. Better to get the gaz removed.

For the Compressor, just keep it in place, next owner will certainly fix it.
