As Irish said I checked the compressor round plug for 12V and it has, checked the wires past the plug,12V yes.
So the compressor is getting a12V feed, then I hit the compressor clutch with a nice piece of 4x1 Ash I had lying around and guess what, the compressor started up and I was surrounded in COOL air!!
I switched the engine off and restarted and I needed to do the same again so I guess its the clutch gap being too wide.
Question is, do I keep using the 4x1 or can I remove the spacer without regassing. ( I would guess I could)

Good stuff!!!...Yes you can remove the spacer without emptying the system. There is a nut on the pulley end of the shaft which retains the clutch plate (Normal r.h. thread). Remove the nut, you will have to stop the shaft from turning to do it, jiggle the clutch plate off the splined shaft and you will see a washer behind the plate..this is the spacer, remove it. Refit the plate and nip the nut up so that the plate is home. Measure the gap between the plate and the pulley, aim for around .010" (.25mm)..if it's slightly less it should be o.k. Main thing is you don't want the plate rubbing on the pulley with the clutch disengaged. If all looks good..tighten the nut. Start the engine, switch the HEVAC to "LO" and see what happens..it should kick in & out freely.
Don't put grease, oil etc. on the face of the plate or pulley and check the face of the plate for wear or damage when you have it off, probably there will be a few light grooves on it but if they are not too deep it will be o.k.

Add to last post.. If needs be for better access, slip the belt off , remove the compressor from the mounting bracket.

Dunno about keeping a piece of 4X1 in the car, there are a few pikeys over here that keep baseball bats in there Transit vans..and they don't have aircon!!
