Hi Guys, how hard is it to change an Air con pump as my one is not pushing out a lot of cold air and took it for a re-charge yesterday, so can I get rid of ghe gas myself or do I take it somewhere that will take it out for me, so I can change the pump as I think the clutch at the front may have gone. It looks like it's only a couple of bolts and electrics, similar to the alternator.

Hi Datatek. It was ok then it just gone slow and not a lot of cold air is coming out, so how can you adjust it as I have not heard about this and the only thing I've seen is you can buy the clutch replacement part but that cost more than a new OME pump. Or I can just ger a second hand pump off Flee bay.

Adjustment is by removal of shims I believe. Clutch slip is not an unusual problem. The compressor rarely fails.

Remove drive flange, clean faces flange and pulley, shim for a 15 thou gap drive flange to pulley.

Just watched a video on You Tube and he says to add some type of shim to take up the slack, so I'll need to measure the gap and see if it needs to be made smaller as he said between 4tho to 5tho gap.

Ok carry on no problem. That is a good reason NOT to watch Youtube videos. Set to 15 thou.

Don't mean to upset you Wammers as I have not got a clue as to take out or add the only thing I noticed was the clutch front is the same as mine and his was fitted to a Volvo. So is there somewhere we can buy the shims or just make them as needed.

Do as described earlier. Measure gap at several places, if excessive remove drive plate, clean surfaces of pulley and drive plate. Set gap to nominal 15 thou. Maybe a little less or a little more at various positions around drive plate. Setting at 4 to 5 thou around plate would be a slight challenge on a worn and maybe slightly warped drive plate. See what washers you have and adjust to best gap.

My local indy pumped out the old gas for me, i changed the parts and then they regassed it for usual charge.

Are you saying there is not a lot of cold air, or that there is lots of air but it's not very cold? Just trying to establish if your blower motor is ok rather than a slipping clutch.

I was thinking of trying a clutch cleaner in there first, do you think it would be a good idea or not.

Unless oil has been spilt on the clutch, I doubt it will make much difference, it's not like a transmission clutch. It's just a steel plate which is pulled by an electromagnet. Wear is the usual problem.

It was just a thought as it's called a clutch, so I thought give it a clean. Ok I can see what I may be doing this weekend. LOL.

a few things here, you do not need to remove the gas to change or adjust the clutch.what pump pressures were you getting when you had it recharged ?there are a few reasons why you may not be getting "cold air"including, lack of gas, blocked condenser or even a jammed or blocked expansion valve.if your high and low pressures are correct then i doubt your compressor clutch is knackered.
