Evening

Came to de-mist windscreen tonight so twisted knob on dash to windscreen, and after 2 seconds air con kicked in, and a horrible grinding squealing noise came with it... Fook

Didnt want to damage anything further so resorted to demisting with my hand, making a nasty mess which I am not proud of. Same happens when air con turned on manually.

Any ideas? Car drives and sounds fine otherwise, nothing obvious from a quick look in the engine bay.

In the mean time, is there anyway to disable the air con, so I can still have some air blowing onto windscreen?

Not too sure about your car but is it definitely the air con. My car is a fairly basic 03 Serengeti & the air con only works with an on/off switch. It wouldn't just be the blower fan that's making the noise. Even if you've got a more sophisticated climate control system I wouldn't have expected the air con to operate on cold winter mornings, at least not until the engine & heater had warmed up properly though I could be wrong. As I say my car is a more basic one. Good luck.

Sounds like the same problem Norbet and myself have both had recently on here.

Norbet's I believe was a piece of plastic catching on the pully following a wade which he spotted from underneath. Mine was the splash gaurd in the drivers side wheel arch catching on the pully.

The pully is on the drivers side towards the front of the car (just behind the wheel arch liner).

Check for any obstructions etc

It makes a horrid noise and I though my gearbox had gone! The aircon activates when you put the demit option or "up" on the blowers - I believe it's to aid demisting of the screen by removing moist air.

Just don't use the "up" setting on the blower or aircon until it's sorted to avoid damaging the pully/belt.

I'm sure it something pretty simple.

Good luck

Yup - sounds very familiar - check under driver side wheel arch & underbelly panel area - likelihood is that a bit of plastic has got caught - easy fix but as bonny says - avoid using it until cleared.

Ah right, didn't know about the dehumidifying function - makes perfect sense now.

Hope you get sorted soon.

twas the plastic guard on mine too. think they can get dislodged a bit if you hit a puddle fast. bonnybrook's bob on with the air con coming on when the vents are positioned to screen.

easy to spot, wheels on full lock right, then look with a torch and you'll see it. put your hand behind and you'll feel the pulley. OBVIOUSLY DON'T DO THIS WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING !!

(you may think I am joking, but there was a member on hear who suggested painting his brake disks. Definitely a member in every sense of the word)
