Putting Nanocom on it I get error 33 Compressor Clutch Open (fault type=Current)

With the car running and Nano connected tonight without clearing fault the compressor kicked in and ice cold air.

Is the little blue connector behind headlamp anything to do with aircon?

I'm also getting a fault of Fuel temp invalid value elsewhere, what could cause this

What year is your car ref Hevac? Fuel temp sensor is in injection pump. Could be bad connection or duff sensor.
 
The car is registered Oct 96, but allegedly in paperwork classed as a 97MY. I take it then from your question they changed something?

As for fuel thingy, this I take it is the part listed in your how to with a link to cheap replacement.

Yes they changed how the dual pressure switch that controls the compressor was powered in 1999. Check connections to that and to compressor. On yours it is supplied direct from Hevac. Later model Hevacs use a relay (relay 3) to do it. No relay 3, no need to check it. That is why i asked. Yes that is the fuel temp sensor.

What does the exterior temperature read at when it's not working? My HEVAC unit has a software fault (a certain batch of them all have this) whereby it can 'forget' the external temperature for five minutes or so after the car has been switched off/on. AC will start working as soon as it registers 1 degree or higher.
 
Outside air temp seems to read correctly,

There is no obvious pattern to when it works, either hot, cold etc.

Going to start checking connections tomorrow, but puzzled about a 2 wire inline plug and socket behind passenger headlight, one part of socket is blue. It's not headlight related but goes into loom that connects to sensor on drier

Should be two blue plugs going to drier. One four wire to dual pressure switch and one two wire going to other pressure switch on drier.
 
I found the two plugs you mention, the one I'm looking at is further up in the loom behind the headlamp and is an inline connector with one of those barbs that supposed to clip into a hole, a hole that does not seem to exist

The rubber seal in this plug has failed and the terminal inside was/is crusty green.

I've cleaned it as best I can at the mo, but could this plug be aircon

C160 is a blue four pin plug with three wires. Red/Black, Yellow/black, Black. For headlamp wash/wipe. If your car does not have headlamp wash/wipe it will be redundant. Similar plug other side.
 
It could be variable voltage at the clutch it works from my memory on magnetic flux as it wears the gap between the disc and the pulley gets bigger and there is a fix of additional wiring and a relay or take it to bits and shim it

They also changed the way the aircon clutch was operated, early cars it's direct from the HEVAC, latercars it's via a relay.

Think i have already mentioned that. It's actually how the dual pressure switch is powered that changed. It controls the compressor.:):)

Finally got a few mins to myself

Plug is blue one side black the other, wire colours are Black/Black Purple and other side of plug they are Black/Red orange

Had a good look on rave and it's nearest to connector C164 , but that is for Auto transmission temperature switch, and on location view picture 24 it's in the right area. So as mine is a manual I'll assume it's redundant, Still have to investigate the aircon

1997 should not have the small green relay 3 in place. On yours dual pressure switch that switches compressor is powered direct form Hevac. Only on 1999 on models is it powered by Hevac via relay 3. Looks like someone has been playing. Look at Hevac section in this. Range Rover P38 Maintenance repair improvements and tips learned by experience by ownership.

I'll have a chat with previous owner, luckily can track everything that has been done since day 1, all at massive expense at the same main dealer. I'm classed as owner 3, first 2 were husband then wife, they have a disco 4 now

The relay is there and the map on bottom of lid shows 3 aircon relays. I suppose I can look for fusebox part number and find out if it is right one for car. Not yet tried removing it to see if it actually does anything.

I must admit I took the top off fusebox and there was that sort of acrid smell you get with hot electrics. It's only very feint but is still noticeable when getting really close.

I'll check it ASAP

If you do remove it disconnect battery first. You can do a lot of damage sparking it. Find out what has been done to car.
 
Finally had chance to have a look, previous owner confirms that fuse box is original.

There are 3 relays in the fuse box for the aircon, but relay 3 is not one of them it has relays 13, 14 & 18 which seem to be normal....thankfully

And aircon is working all the time now
