I should be grateful if someone can tell me the difference between a Defender 200tdi and 300tdi air box. Can a 300 tdi air box be fitted to a 200 tdi engine

The 200tdi has an air import vent on the nearside wing whereas the 300tdi's air vent is on the offside.
Consequently the air pipes from the vent to the filter and the filter to the turbo are totally different as is the engine breather arrangement..
There are some other differences regarding the engine bay layout that would preclude you from fitting a 300tdi airbox.
For example the 300tdi filter sits on the offside of the engine of a bracket that is above the fuel lifter pump that simply doesn't exist on the 200tdi. The fuel filter on the 200tdi would likely interfere with the 300tdi air filter so would need to be moved too.

Will the 300tdi air filter provide adequate throughput and filtering ... Yes.
Would it provide any advantage .... No, I don't think so.

Thanks for the info.
Is the actual canister the same size and are the ports in similar places.
I need the air filter housing for a Defender 200tdi replacing a TD.
I have a high mounted turbo and can position the filter on the rhs as it should be.
I’m happy to fabricate appropriate brackets.

I kept the TD housing on mine.

Here's a Ninety 200Tdi air filter housing for comparison

If you're happy to make bracketry, the answer to your question is yes it will fit. The only additional point you need to modify is for the oil breather hose and you can do this by adding a take-off/breather hose connection stub to the air intake hose. Or, just run the breather to a catch tank.

I could be wromg here, but I think the 2.5 td filter is roughly 1/2 the size of the tdi filter?
In terms of physical size or filter capacity? I think it is slightly smaller but don’t think it is that much of a difference. I have done nealry 300k with my setup so I am quite happy a TD filter is sufficient but would be curious as to the actual differences.

Actual size of the filter itself, I remember looking at one and dismissing it as to small.

Edit, just looked and the 2.5 N/A and the 2.5td seem to run the same part number, so I would assume back when I looked the reason I dismissed it was, me thinking land rover would have used the same air filter set up for the 200 if they could have got away with it.
