After much messing and modification I've finally managed to get a sports steering wheel (Momo) fitted. There are no Freelander specific bosses on the market. So I bought 2, which were supposed to be the closest match. An expensive £70 Momo boss and an inexpensive £25 ebay special. Needless to say both needed to be modified - mostly to the none structural end , the bit that operates the self cancelling for the indicators. The Momo boss as it turned out was an absolute waste of time , effort and money and would need far too much modification - it needed to be ground out too close to one of the steering wheel supports in order for it to fit over the plugs on the rotary coupler which would then potentially weaken the boss so I decided against it.Also it needed to be ground out in order for it just to fit the steering column, something well documented on the MG sites,even though it's supposed to be MGf/TF specific and even then the shaft isn't long enough to reach the cancelling ring on the Freelander, so that would also need to be modified.
The cheap job just needed a little grinding to fit over the cancelling ring, the cancelling ring needed a little beefing up in this area too as it is slightly wider than the column of the boss. That was it. It's in and all working as it should. Cheap job was also listed as for an MGf/TF.

Cool. I love the momo race! It's what I've got to fit as well!

Good job, you need the matching alum MOMO gear knob.

How did you get round the airbag light, or is yours competition FL1? (I've always been curious as to how much resistance the airbag module throws out)

I like the way you turfed the old steering wheel in the passenger foot well (for throwing out the window at innocent bystanders!!)

You get a resistor with the Momo boss that pushes into the air bag loom.As it was already paid for I figured I may as well use it. Don't know the resistance, but it works . The old steering wheel is scrap as the wire and horn plug are needed for the centre push button horn.

Ahhh, that explains it, if you ever get the chance to measure the resistance, I'd be keen to know :)

Used the cheap eBay mgf one. I thought the self cancelling want going to work as the wheel didn't reach the pegs. But the clock spring actuates the canceler.
 
did the insurance go up much?
after you told them you had removed the airbag?

My insurance is for a specialist modified vehicle. The rally Freelander is completely non spec. The silver one - more just an off roader.All air bags are disabled. The roll cages, bucket seats and racing harnesses effectively make the air bags redundant as you are held in the seat and not thrown forward as in an ordinary vehicle. Just need to inform the insurance of the different steering wheel , which is effectively now just a cosmetic change rather than compromising safety. Nothing extra to pay.
However I suspect this may have a bearing on ZDomZ, depending on his insurance company.
