While my ‘97 D1 was up, doing the 6-12 tire pull clearly answered the question as to why I get an on-off rumbling from the passenger front tire. Bad wheel bearing. That being said, my vehicle came with wheel offsets. Happily having sold them, the steering is better and not as heavy. Not sure about this but I think the offsets could have put more pressure on the wheel bearings, due to their extra distance outboard.

Anyway I have Timken bearings and grease, a large socket for that thrust nut, washers and seals. My only observation here is that there are no races that came with the bearings. Timken part LM603049-20024. Is this a concern? Thanks.

Do you have a manual?
There should be two races and bearings, either side of the hub.
In my Haynes manual (diesel) there is an exploded diagram in chapter 9.

Thank you for the information. The ‘3049’ is the bearing, to which I have, and the ‘3011’ is the outer races which I don’t have. I can order just the races. Great that I know this BEFORE having to start work.
 
That's interesting to know. I thought that they (the bearings and races) came as one. I did all 4 wheels on mine but didn't think to check the different part numbers. Another lesson learned.

Timken are the only bearings worth fitting IME, nothing else even comes close - weird that you can buy them in halves tho o_O ..

Which grease are you planning to use ? It's my opinion that Castrol Pyroplex Red ( or equivalent ) is way better than the "recommended" LM, and in over 50 years of mucking about with LR's, I've never had a wheel bearing fail... :)
 
I will be using Timken wheel bearing grease. I suspect as to why the bearing failed was the extra lateral forces due to wheel spacers. When I first got the vehicle, the steering was a bit sluggish. Once the spacers were off, a more responsive steering came back. Personally, I think that anything that adds resistance or extra pressure, may not be a good thing.
 
I had a chuckle at your post title. I had a neighbor stop at a petrol station to air up all his tyres, jumped back in his car to drive off but then ended up with a dead battery.
Coincidence? lol
