I got fed up off different mechanics telling many different opinions of what was wrong with our discovery. First it was a bearing, then a cv joint then a whole new transfer case. Well, after pricing all of the above - confusion set in and was totally unsure of what was the problem. Two nights ago, the vibration when hitting 50 - 60 kms got WORSE and the clunking between drive and reverse was unbearable to keep listening to, it finally went clunk for the last time. As I pulled over,in the dark, I thought that was it. I would never drive this again.
Arrived the next morning, took a look underneath and the front drive shaft was just hanging there!! Un-did a few bolts, took it off, then put the diff-lock on and away she goes!!!!
The vibration, the clicking and the clunking was the front driver shaft the whole time!! Now she was smoother, quieter and the best she has sounded in a long time!!!
Don't believe everything that you are told by mechanics but do trust those who own or have owned a Discovery before!!!
!!Someone once told us that when you own a landy, you can 99% of the time, unbolt something and keep going. It will never leave you stranded!!!
