Hello,

I was given a Jeep Grand Cherokee by a friend and got myself into offroading. The Jeep is not in great condition, and have had no end of gear box and transmission problems. I have decided that I would sooner get rid of it, and move onto a machine built for offroading... a Land Rover Defender. I have always fancied one, and finally plucked up the courage to buy one. However, I'm after any advice or suggestions on what to go for, what to look out for, what to avoid etc. I am far from a defender expert, and a newbie to offroading.

I'm looking to spend no more than £4000. Ideally a SWB.

I have seen two for sale in my area, both 3.5l V8's which look to be in good condition. One hard top and one canvas. One was a 1986 and the other a 1988.

If anybody knows of anything that could be ideal for me, or has any advice, it would be much appreciated. Thanks :) :)

Don't buy a V8.
Look for a really good 300TDi - you should get one with your budget.

I've got a '94 110 Defender, for sale for £3995 if you're interested.
I'm based in Kent, I don't off road it or tow with it (I've got another one for that!) and it's very tidy for the year (mint inside). FLRSH for last 5 years and 109k miles.

Don't listen to the boring 'uns, fuel economy is over rated! V8s are the dog's baws, and you'll grin every time you push the loud pedal in one! Get it converted to LPG and you can't go wrong. You could pick up a pre 90s V8 for half your original budget as well.

if ya get a v8 then your b scared ta go in the wet stuff!fuel economy aint got nowt ta do wiv it!wats the difference between 25mpg and 15mpg, fook all thats wat!dont think ANYONE buys a fender for 'fuel economy!!'duuuh!

i would go for a 200td or 300tdi. there ment to be the best engines and still being friendly to work on.
