One of the last jobs left to is connect up my new aerial, but I can't work out how to get it from the speedo housing to the back of the stereo. I assume it runs behind the grey plastic that covers the vents, but how do I get to it?

Mine just passes through the rear side of the dash binnacle, it doesn't actually go behind the grey facia. Maybe that's just mine :)

Yep, It's ok their, All the ones I've seen have been their.
And if you did want to hide it, I'd say it wants to be under the shelf and not behind the grey bit.

Ok, cool. How do I get below the shelf? Going to have to wire in my alarm in the next few days :(

The shelf is held in by the grey bit if I remember right, so you'll need to take the dash top off, then the grey bit.
Obviously you'll need the radio console out of the way, and then the shelf will pull out.
Their is a channel at the back of the shelf that the wiring loom runs in, then a notch out of it for the radio harness to come out off.
Depending on how much you have to do you may be able to leave the radio console and shelf in and push the wires into it as on mine their was a slight gap. (but my dash was already back together, as like you I left my aerial until last so was too late)
Hopefully that makes a bit of sense or I'll try again

Ok, yeah that makes sense. Sounds like a bugger to do though. I'm running out of willpower!

Yeah, you're not the only one.
It sounds worse than it is, although taking dashes apart is one job I can't be arsed with, but lr's are a doddle compared to cars :)

To take the top rail off you'll need to unscrew the clocks, the grab handle has a screw threw it into the top rail as does the heater controls on the other side.

Thanks. This may be Sundays job, might park it sideways next to the garage with the door open and have a tarpaulin to keep the heat in. There are just so many wires though!

I just don't want it to be stolen! And I also want radio, I don't have many CDs any more...

An alarm is totally pointless on Defender, if they want it they'll have it. I find a Disclock with a dummy kill switch on show and a functioning hidden kill switch. I also intend fitting a tracker sometime before Christmas.

I quite fancy one of those new Dab radios, next to nothing now in the sales.

When I did mine I straightened a wire coat hanger and fed it behind the grey cover from behind the stereo towards the speedo. I then taped the wires to the coat hanger and pulled them through. Worked a treat.

Blimey can you still get wire coat hangers.?! I remember them fondly as a child. The television reception in our house was poor if not crap, we would often pop a wire coat hanger in the television and effectively use it as an ariel - Happy days. :)

Ideally I want a stereo with dab and Bluetooth, but they are still £140ish for a decent one, so I'm going to settle for one from ebay with an aux in and amp connector.

As for alarm, I have to do it for my insurance. Plus a tilt sensor should help if someone tries to lift it onto a loader.

I like the coat hanger idea. Might also try attaching it to the existing aerial cable.

Haha well done chap... Good stuff....photies needed!!!

Yep, I will put a thread somewhere of my stereo setup upgrade.

I won this

JVC Car Stereo | eBay

Hopefully will be a decent upgrade on a budget.

I have an amp and sub to go in, but not sure a sub will fit with all of my expedition stuff, so may just amplify the rear speakers.
