Hello Everyone,

Was wondering if someone might give an inexperienced Land Rover owner some guidance to fix the following on my 1974 Series 3. My symptoms are:

1. Very fast idle (seems to get faster and faster after driving). It’s to the point where the car is so noisy waiting at a junction that people look.

2. Excessive fuel consumption (with smell of fuel vapours)

3. Engine “Runs On” after ignition turned off.

I am a little irritated as it just come back from garage (at great expense) after total ‘overhaul’. Sadly, I now have the landy in London and miles from the garage. Interestingly, I know the garage fiddled with the ignition timing, cleaned out the carb and replaced the choke whilst it was in the garage. Other useful information might be as follows (1) previously idled beautifully (was almost silent) (2) no issues with starting (3) never had issues of fuel consumption or vapours before (4) Weber 34 ICH carb fitted (5) still drives beautifully - no issues with power.

If someone could outline a step by step plan of how I might be able to try and fix, that’d be great. I’ve never been able to fix something on my own before (always resort to garage) so would be a real achievement. From my research possible causes appear to be ignition timing, air intake leak, choke incorrectly set, carburettor solenoid valve sticking open (not that I understand that)....

Thanks (as always)

Thanks - do I need to do anything else before I start this (any specific ignition checks) for example and do I need any tools (gasmeter, tachometer, timing light)? And would the carb adjustment (or current lack of) explain all the symptoms identified above? If so, will give it a try. Thanks again

Its advisable to check the timeing before you adjust the carb as the timng can be set "exactly". You shoudl find static timing (fully retarded) in the manual or someone can post a link. If you se the carb and then find the timeng is off you have to do the carb again.

First get the static timing right, then tune the carb with a Gunson colour tune [ a simple to use low cost device ] You tube how to video's are your friend.

Or download the tuning instructions. There's only one adjustment on the idle setting. To establish a baseline you screw it all the way in, screw out by one full turn, check the idle and if still out turn it in or out by quarter turns.

Unless the other things are right you will find it difficult to get the idle to remain correct.
