the spring loaded belt tensioner on my 300 tdi is on its way out (i think) is it a easy diy job or a re morgage, any input welcome

If it's just the bearing that's gone then that can be replaced, granted the circlip is a little awkward to get out, but a bit of effort and you've saved yourself £50!

Buy and fit a replacement, it’s a very easy job to replace.

Then buy the bearing and circlip from e bay and repair the old one as a spare. Removing the old circlip is a nightmare as its not designed to be removed without stabbing yourself at least twice with the screwdriver.

If the unit runs out of true it will shred one of the ‘strands’ off your fan belt, this in turn will whip through your top hose

Use a section of an old top hose as a shield for next time (just cable tie in place).
