hiya, just bought TD5 and replaced offside rear suspension air bag as leaking, and looked through all paperwork to find that the nearside rear was replaced last year. could anyone tell me please whether with the air suspension on the rear, whether when going over bump at very low speed, ie backing onto a drive with a low kerb etc, you are supposed to feel knocks from the rear?? not loud knocks or anything, and in normal driving its great, but very low speeds, i can feel and hear some' knocks' !! i didnt know whether this was a charastic of the suspension system or something more sinister???? many thanks

Hi no this dont sound normal, but not being with you hard to say, you could have a bush gone.
May be you could help me.
How high do you have to jack car to get bag in.
Do you think you could do one at side of road with standard Disco jack.
The moore i think about youre problem i do rekon you have bush gone.
I did have problem with rear prop clunking when moving off either direction, nothing loose but i took rear coupling off and reseated it and it was fine.

Hi Mark
To be honest i didnt do the change but i watched a Land Rover garage do it, and he had ramps, but he had a bottle jack under rear on chassis and i would say didnt jack more than 4 - 5 inches!!!
All in all, start to finish, it was under 10 minutes and cost £120 incl new bag, which to me was a bargain!

Thanks for the reply fella, you know you could be right. im ok on old VDubs and things but this is all new to me, so will get it checked out asap.

hope you get yours sorted.

Graeme

do check that rea prop coupling, it can clunk when moving off either way.
From memory the bolts where F/T BUT ONCE RESEATED IT WAS FINE.

I confirm the bush theory ... first check the lower bushes from the dampers.... but could be any bush there

evening
took Disco out this afternoon and had to go over some roughish gravelly ground and the 'knocking' was quite bad, and the rear end also seems to 'wallow' side to side and that seems to make knocking worse!!
amost sounds and feels as though suspension is bottoming out, although it isnt???
anymore suggestions please as i need to bolt towba on and hook up caravan soon for holiday!!
thanks
G

Check your anti roll bar and drop links.

If a bush has gone or a link broken, this could cause the banging and would explain a wallowy ride.

My bet is on the watts linkage bushes. Mine did exactly this

+1 i have just replaced mine.

If you goto www.discovery2.co.uk which is urban panzers own site there is a step by step guide.
It is an easy job IF you have access to press.

took me about 20 mins to get the linkage off (3 bolts) another 5mins to strip it down (2 bolts)

£20 + 1/2 hour of a friends lunch hour to press the old bushes out and the new ones in

then about 1/2 hour to reassemble , you will need a good torque wrench.

Andy

I managed it without a press but would have much rather had one.

I used a heavy duty machinemart vice and a bunch of 1/2" sockets as a press, using a hammer to knock the vice tight. Works and shocks the bushes out. Not recommended as it might damage the vice, but I decided it would be worth a shot - ironically, I did mine the same weekend Urban Panzer put the pics up, so I didn't have the opportunity to follow his instructions. Probably for the best as I think he'd have put me off trying without the press!

hi gents, you are so right. i took the disco to a local garage and he diagnosed exactly that.the bottom link bush has that much play you can move it with your hand and see the bush is shot to bits.
having it done tomorrow.
Thankyou all for your feedback and suggestions. this sight is great and yo are all very helpful.
many thanks

Hi Del
No worries, im learning all the time. Complicated toys these Disco's !!!!

at the risk of pushing me luck, i was wondering how i change the handbrake gaitor. Ive now unraveled the mysteries of the tfr box one, but i dont know how to remove gaitor from where it attaches to the consul!!!
any ideas??
Graeme:confused:

just to say have had the bushings replaced, and it was exactly as you all had said. clever lot :D

wow, what a difference it has made. its now great to drive and no wallowing of knocking!!!!!!!!!

Also have managed to change the tfr box gaitor and handbrake gaitor.

thanks everyone
;)
