Hello Everyone,

This is my first post and I'm after a little advice.

I'm hoping to buy a Discovery, I don't have a great deal of money to spend on one so I'll probably be looking at around the '98 model.

My question is I've seen a few 300 TDi's for sale, but for a little extra cash I have seen ones with slightly higher mileage but the TD5 model.

What are the major differences (Power/Drive wise) between the two? and which would be the best buy?

I run mine and diesel. ( and its a great bit of kit ).

last time i checked thay were both diesel.:) next time your out laneing/off roading drive it throw a lake an then tell me its a great peace of kit. my mate drove his 2002 td5 throw a lake 12 months ago an its never run since its had new ecu/fuel pump/body control unit/an lots of other things that i carn't remember its even had a new engine 5 an half k later an still not running its even been to LR main dealer an thay don't know what's up with it .
 
having had a bit of experience with both, i would say 300tdi if you want a workhorse, td5 if you want something a bit posher that wont be getting too much stick off road.
however i find the steering on the td5 to be really twitchy and annoying compared to the 300tdi.
also td5 is totally gutless unless you rev it.
 
That’s all very well slagging off TD5’s but I’ve owned a 3OO for over 5 years and its rusted away to buggery! Its cost me £600 to repair. My point is even if you have the money, its hard to find a good 300TDI these days, believe me I looked! Ended up buying a TD5 because the underside was much, much better that any 300TDI.

i agree, had a few 200/300tdi's and theyve failed m.o.t every year due to rotten cills and seat belt anchor points, got rid and got a 2000 td5 which is in much much better condition all round, maybe not as reliable but easy enough to work on, main thing they dont corrode half as fast as the tdi's do. Also ive seen a td5 90 half way up the window in water and was still running, some people talk utter **** on here because they havnt got a td5 and deep inside they really want 1, thats why they slag them off, ive had 2 now and had no problems engine wise and no worry of cambelt snapping coz they ant got 1. look after it and service it well and it will look after you. 300s are rot boxes fact!!

weve got a billy bull****ter in here! more fool the owner for driving a td5 disco through a lake, did it have a snorkel? ive seen a td5 90 at kirton with the engine fully submirged under water and was still running. How the fook is it still not running right when uve replaced engine, ffs u talk some ****!

I've seen a couple of adverts...

The first is a '97 (P) 300 TDi 112K with 19 Main Dealer stamps in service book and recent cam belt change, one owner from new, looks in good nick, £2485

OR

1995 (M) with 60000 miles, FSH for £1950

What do you think?

first 1 sounds better mate. id go with that 1
 
ive a td5 defender and its regulaly off road and over the bonnrt with water, get a snorkel, make sure its sealed properly and its not a problem

I cannot comment on the 300 as I,ve never driven/worked on one.

My TD5 has been a faithfull " workhorse ", towing up to 3 tons and slopping around farms loaded with gear.

Maintanence can be more costly, but it feels very " car like ".

Mine is a late 2002, so is now 8 years old. It has surface rust on the chassis and axles and has NO rust on the body anywhere. ( the only rust is on the rear window guides ).

I,m confident that this vehicle can massively outlast the D1, relitavely, in terms of rust.

There is loads and loads of info over the internet now about the TD5 Disco and I have found it very straight forward maintaining mine. ( LZ of course ).

Joking aside, as in my profile picture, I regularly wade water, with the " bow wave " over the headlights. ( thanks to the road flooding across the acsess to my gaff ). ( I,m not going into a lesson about wading, as I,m sure we all know about it ).

I would say the major factor when buying a D1 is the condition of the underneath, and usual rust points....mileage is not too much of a major issue, whats the point of having a low mileage motor and the body is a bag of ****

billy bull****ter ye!!!!!!:hysterically_laughi he will give you a grand cash an he will pay for all the parts if !!!!!!you!!!!!! can get it going believe me it wont go the lad has more money than seance its only his off roader

I can do it even if it means checking every wire in loom compression test, timing,every sensor etc,etc-its a vehicle not a ****ing space ship.
I play with 500,000 pound machines-how ****ing hard can it be.

Drop me a grand supply the parts and deliver the vehicle we have a deal.
