My mate has been to see an 02 plate td5 manual which has been sat for 12 months...he stuck a battery on it and it fired up..drove ok and ticked over ok...however there is a loud whining noise coming fro somewhere when stationary...any ideas folks thanks in advance

Use a stethoscope or similar, plastic tube while blocking other ear with an ear plug for instance, and try to locate it.
Also, does it go away when the clutch is depressed, or engaged/released?
Could be something to do with the auxiliary drive belt, eg any of the pulleys/items driven by it, possibly also spigot bearing, although I'd feel the latter to be less likely.
A warped exhaust manifold whistling sounds a bit like a squeaky drive belt but that is not normally so noticeable, if at all, at tickover.
Best of luck.:)
