Hi all,

At weekend i went under my 03 Range Rover and noticed that the suspension parts e.g. suspension arms, joints etc... are starting to look like they have a bit of surface rust :eek: my question whats the best solution to clean them up and preserve them ready for winter etc.. was thinking about wire brushing them then waxoil'ing them or maybe give them a coat of hammerite? What do you think?

I am thinking of having the car waxoyl treated. Around here can have it done for about £350-400. All under the car and all cavities as well.
I always liked the Waxoyl.
I am not sure about Hammerite..

How come you dont just get a few cans of waxoil from halfords etc... and do it your self? its only £30 for 5 litres at halfords.

Because I would need a lot of other equipment too. A decent compressor, all the little pipes to get in the cavities and ofcourse needs a good wash too. I have done my cars in the past with the Waxoyl kit, but it is a **** job. You get covered in the stuff. Also need to be quite warm in the place where you work, because the Waxoyl not runny enough otherwise.
And I am not sure how many X5L would I need for the RR?
 
I would go with waxoil. Not sure how good the hammerite stuff is. Waxoil will penetrate the rust so no need for a wire brush. Russ the guy i use quoted about £100 to seal my RR so £400 sounds steep.
 
I waxoyl'd my old classic a few years back. Just hosed the underside and bruched the waxoyl on by hand. It was messy but if you wear goggles, gloves and an old boiler suit, it doesnt take that long. Started off using a compressor but it was messy and would have ended up with wax all over my drive.

I used the waxoyl with the black dye in it, looked really good when I did it and still looked good 2 years later when I sold the car.

Yust as an aside - I prep my bike for the winter with stuff called AFC50 - you clean the bike, cover the breaks then spray it on, during the winter, every couple of weeks you give it another spray (over the dirt) - in the spring you just wash the bike as normal and all the crud falls off - was thinking of spraying the electrical parts underneath the RR this year as well...
 
We've come a long way since the old 50/50 mix of old engine oil and paraffin was sprayed on just before winter. Waxoil is good, just put a large pan of water on a camping stove with Waxoil tin in it heat so waxoil is thin enough to spray. Don't use Hammerite you will have a super paint finish with a rusty part underneath it after a while.
