hello folks,

I'm looking at buying a discovery 3, it's a 55 plate manual with 300,00 miles.
Heard both good and bad but wanted some other views.
Any info would be great

I dont own one, but i do think if you can afford to run it they are very good.
i know of 3 with conrods gone through the block
Hand brake can be a problem and cost around £800
Rear bushes seem to go pretty quick
I could not afford to run one, and when my TD5 gives in i doubt i will ever own another after 37 years of them. Get my 80 back on the road
Just to complicated what ever happens it will need plugging
Buy right sell it right
 
Yup any 10 year old motor with that mileage (30,000 per year) possibly an ex rental, anything that rotates could be worn out, although rentals are serviced by the book or should be, but then it may be a 'reborn' and in its second life with most items having been replaced..... if your luckly

I've got a low mileage one and still ended up putting a new motor in due to the big ends going and writing off the motor. Plus new suspension arms, compressor, gearbox service (sealed for life yeah right) calipers, bearings, cv joints, electric faults.

Run a mile, or at least do your home work.
They are great cars but the do go wrong and it's usually stuff even a good diy mechanic can't fix.

I recon on minimum 800 quid per job even at a indie.

Ie turbo replacement is a body off job, as is cambelt and even exhaust manifold change!
 
Personally I don't touch it. It is at the end of its life and on borrowed time. You will be kept busy with repairs with one that has half that mileage.

Best car I've ever had and I've had some belters.
My wife's is a 7 seat hse and it does everything you could ever want from a car and is awesome offroad. It tows massive weights and you wouldn't know you were towing.
With the back flat is huge and I've had 8ft plaster boards in it, can take two full size mtbs and all the cycling gear and tools without dismantling the bikes. I've even slept in it with both dogs.

The problem is when I got it it took a lot to get it right, now it never misses a beat. The egr valves don't last though and one of ours are blanked off with a 2p coin. Till I gave up with the egr valves ours had 3 sets.

This one in question has gone off ebay anyway so presumably sold.

+1 Better a well looked after high mileage one than a garage queen!
All depends on the price. If its cheap, just budget for repairs, Turners and others now sell parts for complete engine rebuilds, if it came to that.
But dont buy a "bargain" if you cant afford to run it!

Thought I would comment on the "body off" info.
According to the Disco3 website, the body doesn't need to come off for cambelts, turbos etc. Dealers do it because they are equipped too and therefore it saves, some, time.
AFAIK everything is DIY'able just takes time and patience.

I don't have a D3, but they do seem expensive to repair and there are know faults, but this has to be all about condition and maintance.

If there is documented history and ltd of bills for work done then it may not be a bad purchase.


Just buy it with your eyes wide open.

My Rover 75 diesel, with the BMW engine, has 297k on the clock and it is mechanically spot on, drives nicely , been well looked after, bodywork has scratches etc.but could be fixed if I wanted
 
Whilst reading this thread I wondered if Americans come on here now and again to laugh at our diddy mileages
