Hi
I've had my D2 for around a year now. She drives like a dream but I'm planning to put her in for a major service because I'm planning a long road trip across Europe.
I'm taking out the rear airbags and replacing them with springs as well as a major service.

Can anyone advise on what else I should address even if it's preventative?

If as u say "I'm planning to put her in for a major service" why are you bothering with anything else to address now, anything that could be iffy will be found, that's what a full service includes hence the additional expense, then it up to you.

The garage may simply do the job for a service and nothing more.....and not look for anything in particular.
That's why I'm asking the question.... so I can ask them to check things that may not be in a service.
 
Don't remove your air springs for a starters Iv just fixed a pump fault, fitted new bags and valve block at the same time its a simple but good system and with an emergency inflation kit plumbed in fall proof.

I'm on 175k Standard checks engine oil, filters brake pads wheel bearings all fluids
 
I've had 4 x brake pads and discs changed a few months back plus two front wheel bearings.
I had the EGR blanked on a V8 previously - any advice on getting this done on my TD5?

What about a full engine flush?

I think I've got a coolant problem as I need to top up about a litre every few months. I know this because my heating becomes intermittent. In traffic, she blows cool... at speed she blows hot. Temp gauge is fine...possible head gasket on the way out?

I use an Indi to work on my Disco and I like to tell him what needs to be done rather than just saying "service", so maybe someone with more knowledge than me will be able to let you know the recommended stuff that should be done at that sort of mileage.
 
That's what I was thinking.... it's how I've always instructed the indi's and tell them what needs doing and checking ....but this is my first TD5 so a bit unsure...
 
Is there anything obviously in need of fixing, or are you just trying to cover all bases to be on the safe side?
 
Mostly covering the bases.... although I have an engine leak and that coolant that's going somewhere...
After living with a D2 (as unreliable as they can be) in extremely hot weather, I'm used to preventative maintenance.... I didn't want t get stranded in 50 degree heat.

Are u a customer that tells a professional what to do ?:)
The link below will give u an idea of what's covered within a D2 service, if you have concerns then tell them, no one is going to know about the loss of coolant over a month period unless u tell them. http://www.discovery2.co.uk/pdf_files/mclt010x.pdf
 
No.... I kinda got used to garages trying to rip me off for things that didn't need doing... Thanks for the info BTW.
 
If you have any concerns about your head gasket, you should get it sorted or you will be worrying about it all the time you are abroad.

190k here. Just got back from a skiing trip in the alps. 850 miles day one and then 850 miles on day 7. Was I afeard? Nope, gave the old girl a good going over before I left, she doesn't know she's in France after all, and she's reliable generally so...

Amusingly it seemed that every other 2nd brit car was a Disco - although we were by far the oldest, everyone else was in a Disco 3,4, Sport or the new thing that looks like a Ssangyong Rodius.

BTW, I did replace the bags in the summer, but why wouldn't you? SLS is aces!

I think people forget that airbag failures abroad can be a costly repair. They've never let me down on this D2 but have on others... just when I least expected it.
As nice as they are, I'd trade them off for peace of mind any day with regular springs.

Oh and BTW, the ACE was removed on my D2 by the previous owner. I don't know quite why.
