Hi All, I need some advice, please!!

My 2001 TD5 wont start today. I drove it yesterday and it was running fine. Today, it turns over but there's no fuel pump sound and no plug light (The three red lights all light).

I've checked all fuses and wiggled all of the relays under the seat and in front of the gear stick.

The fob is behaving oddly, in that the red light no longer flashes when I unset the alarm (just indicators).

I fear a dead ECU...Any ideas gratefully received!
 
I've now disconnected the battery to leave overnight...hopefully it'll clear whatever the issue is...we shall see!
 
☹...No change. The immobiliser light is off (once I've pushed the unlock button) so I don't think that's the issue.

Will look at the inertia switch next (I've tried resetting but not yet bypassing)
 
Try removing the battery from the fob and reinstalling as if its a new one. You need to drain any charge left in the fob by pressing the buttons then resync it like the handbook says (i cant remember exactly how but its somethng simple like pressing unlock 5 times)
 
This may not help as I believe it wont turn over if its a fob issue but an easy thing to try anyway
 
Check the earth near the ecu too. As well as waggling the yellow relays remove and check the connections make sure they are clean and tight. Check the relays are actually working. Pull the red plug from the ecu and check for oil contamination.

Thanks for the advice both.
So...I have now tried:
- bypassed the inertia switch. No chnage and 125 mA current when the ignition's on (which seems about right?)
- removed and checked all the relays behind the gearstick and under the seat (using continuity tester and 12v source to switch them)
- checked all the fuses in the same places (all have 12v on both sides)
- changed the battery in the fob (sets with the usual double beep [I have the wrong rear door, so.it doesn't trigger the switch] and solid immobiliser light...unsets with indicator flash but jo rapid flashing on immobiliser light)
- checked the earth on the ECU. Seems solid and him have good continuity from the case to the chassis.

I'm out of ideas...! Would a Nanocom help?
 
Do you get the yellow heaters dash board light when you first turn the ignition key ?
Did you listen for the pump outside the vehicle, if the pressure is ok it is quite quiet.
You can check the voltage on the feed from the relay to the fuel pum, under the driver's seat.

I get no yellow lights at all and no sound from the fuel pump. The pump is normally clearly quite clearly audible from the driver's seat, so I'm confident its not running...

As I don't get the yellow glow plug light or the fuel pump, I'm working on the basis that the problem is with the ECU or inputs to it...does that sound right?

I had exactly the same story, withj no glow plug lights and no fuel pump sound, it was the relay under the drivers seat, replaced it and it was OK:

I want to check the main relay, but I only have two relays under the driver's seat. There are three in the Haynes manual (Main, Glow Plug and Fuel Pump). Any idea which one might be elsewhere....and where elsewhere is!?

Hi All, thanks for the advice and checking back. Still no joy. I've now confirmed:
- The inertia switch and main relay are working correctly, as the power to the fuel-pump and glow plug relays switches with the ignition. I think this also means that the ECU is taking the relevant main relay pin to ground.
- The ground connection to the ECU is good (checked at the pins in the black plug)
- The ECU is powered (checked at the black plug)
- The battery is full charged.
- The ECU doesn't seem to take the relevant fuel-pump or glow plug relays to ground.

I've ordered a Nanocom, so I'm hoping that'll shed some light on things...

I'll keep you posted.
