Hi all

I am luck enough to have a P38 2001 4.0 V8 range rover with LPG conversion.

Would love to get more engine roar from induction noise as i did in my boy racer days. I have a couple of things i need some advice on.

With the LPG conversion do i need to be careful with the air fuel mixture, i am worried that changing the air filter will cause problems when running on LPG? I don;t want to have to make any changes to the engine management if i add an induction kit.

Can anyone recommend where i can buy the kit i need.

Thanks in advance

I don't think I would bother with an induction kit but I would get a panel filter from k&n. It gets so hot in the engine bay I reckon it would just make a noise and make no performance difference. Then again I haven't looked at the size of the airbox inlet, this tends to be where the restrictions are on motors. Was definately the restriction on my bike. Perhaps this will compensate the heat. Not an expert but played around a bit with k&n's on my bike.

K&N for me, advantage wound be cleaning it instead of buying a new one every 10k, or whatever it is.

K&Ns do jack ****, other that filter air. Cleaning kit is £10.00 new standard filter £5.00.

Think i will join this silly thing, something funny may happen, up-here we call them self-harmers:crazy:
Grab some popcorn :pop2:
Share some beers :5bcheers2:

And enjoy the show....you are more than welcome to join me, I remember a loooonnngggg thread on the tuning of the M51 Diesel engine, that was quite a good show, hoping this one proves just as enjoyable...:D

I have to agree K&N do nothing other than filter the same as a much cheaper standard filter would, but with more noise. I’d only fit one to a kit car, engine swap (ie: my Honda engine in a classic mini) or if I simply can’t get the OE part.

Once cleaned and coated in the new oil they will cause the same problems as the foam/sponge filters – the air being pulled through the filter will carry small amounts of sticky oil, this then lands on the hot wire inside the air mass causing false readings at first and eventually bingo – yet another part needs replacing

if your doing it just for the noise you'd be better replacing the exhaust with a good stainless system. The uprated noise would be a by-product of a new exhaust system which will last longer than your vehicle.

As Saint said, the under bonnet temps in these and running an open induction system would be more detrimental to your performance.
Stick with paper and if your worried about good air filtration change it once a month...they're cheap enough. You can get 40 elements for the price of a K&N.

K&N is better stuck on a race car which these RR's are not.

Saint didn't mention underbonnet temps, that was me.

How big is the airbox feed to the engine, I will check mine out tomorrow. This is where the restrictions and hp sapping restrictions apply, and that the main benifit of the induction kits usually doing away with the air box sort this out. More surface area to suck through. It is about free flow cool air to the engine, but opening up the smallest restriction is a starting point, then getting the fuel right for the new air flow, most likely compensated for by the air flow meter in this case, as long as oil from k&n hasn't knackered it. Unlikely. But do you need more hp?

K&N nice looking kit but are they really worth it on a RR, not exactly a performance motor. Ram the 4.6 in a ac cobra and i would have a k&n ontop the holley carb.

10 quid for a cleaning kit for a k&n, sod that, do it myself. But i know what you mean, 5 rips for a standard filter is a bargain, why pay more.

I have a single exit stainless system bought from rimmers. This makes a nice enough deep rumble. Toying with ripping the innerds out of the cats and welding a pipe in, probably will give more hp than sticking a k&n on. 16 years of driving around, probably clogged to the gunnels.

And do not run the engine with the mixture lean (hi flow air filter) without getting the mixture reset, you can get the mother of all backfires that can wreck your throttle butterfly, or in my case blow my airbox to bits!

I can see it now, future boy racers buying one of those, complete with engine sounds for their electric cars.:D
