I've recently been delivered a new Blacksheep Rear Cross Member. A couple of questions:

Would you prime/paint it before fitting? (masking off the areas to be welded and finish them after).

I'm keen to use my compressor and spray gun as I want a decent finish. So, what primer would you recommend?
 
prime it all, grind off primer at weld position and then use weld thru primer where you have cleaned it.
 
What Daft says. Even better get it galvanised and painted before welding. Just clean up the parts where you will be welding then repaint with galvy paint and finish coat.
 
Hi,
New defender owner here.. How long can I expect a crossmember to last? Was told the crossmember was new, paperwork says it was replaced in 2010.. Not quite so new?

one of my crossmembers til the end of time, as for other pattern crossmembers ive cut the off only a few years old!
 
I was going to say it'll take years for one of Clive's cross members to rust through painted or not!!! Best thing I've ever fitted to my 90 he should fit them at the factory!!!
 
I expect mine to need replacing in a couple of years, and its now 3 years old, was replaced not long before I bought it.
Ive looked after it, cleaned it out, hammerited every 6 months, but theres still rust I can see, and the exhaust hanger has just fallen off...

What make is that sounds terrible ! or your prep isn't good enough.


1994 still on the original factory cross member daily drive in all conditions off road too. used jenoseel and hamerite when purchased 8 years later chasis is still like new ! one small hole in rear cross member where I chipped it and forgot to touch up
 
Mine is the original - 19 years old - chassis as well - no welding - and the last 5 years most of the time it is used off road - never painted it or anything - but is kept inside and jet washed occasionally,

i think the jet wash is key mine has never been left caked in mud or salt to allow moisture to be trapped in only 3rd owner and it was loved from new.

when purchased had ever so slight surface corrosion so treated straight away (most wouldn't have thought worth it / overkill) but if i didn't treat it would be a new chassis by now / plates needed for sure.
 
Mine is a 25 years old original,couple of small patches,extended flaps cover outer ends and sprayed with oil/diesel every year on working farm land-rover.

The most important element is that it is kept dry inside - I do have an extra diesel tank under rear wheel arch and have now fitted water tank at other side and have no mud flaps as they would only keep falling off so keeping it clean is a bit awkward - on a trip to Santander the 110 was on deck for a day so was jet washed at the nearest place after getting of the boat!.

Be interesting to see inside it, you may be disappointed.
Good way to test your rear crossmember is to get the hight lift out with the round adaptor, jack it up and if cross member distorts its fooked.
 
Soon as mine arrived from pressbrake I degreased it, painted it with a generous coat of galvafroid and then 3 coats of red oxide .. ready for a spray coating of Matt black once it's fitted ,, ;-)
