I would try looking at your wiring see if any bare wires are touching each other or any loose wires under bonnet. Check round the fuses, relays as well.

Hi debs I'm new on here too, my d2 does similar things, the old fella I got her off told me the m+s lights coming on were something to do with the immobiliser, and he had a new wiring loom fitted behind the dash, I've had her 12 months an shes only started to m+s me in bad weather, looked deeper into it and turn out she likes to let water in arround the windscreen and sunroof so I'm on with making her water tight, if I was you just for piece of mind check yours out for water ingress and give your immobiliser coil behind the steering column a clean. Best of luck

Welcome to the forum @Debs td5 .
Check your battery voltage is @ 12.7 VDC and verify your battery connections are tight and not corroded.

It may be worth checking the red plug and the engine ecu for signs of oil ingress from the injector harness (see YouTube for tutorial) as this has been reported to cause the engine to run rough and cut out and flashing m&s lights and the signal from the engine coolant sensor also passes through so could also be corrupted.
