want to change the diff oil and been told to put a little ATF in for a day to clean the diff, would this do it or could it find a weak point in the seal and start a leak. Thanks :D
 
hmmm, running a diff not in the correct oil/fluid would only be a shortcut to issues...

ATF is a good detergent that is for sure, but running a diff in ATF, not what I would recommend, if it needed cleaning, better to take it out and clean correctly in a spirit washer or similar, then replacing and filling with the correct oil....just my opinion.
 
Just drain it and fill with correct oil. If the old stuff is dirty leave new oil for a week or so then change again.
 
Makes you wonder how diffs coped before all the super priced synthetic oil came into being. Might be a good idea in a Ferrari but a bit over the top for a Range rover. EP 90 changed regularly is just as good.

+1 ep90 or 80w/90 from local factors with regular changes is as good as anything and 1/2 the price
 
Thanks Gents, that's wot I woz thinking but thought I would just ask to be sure. yes Druim, looked at that on Ebay, think gona put some cheap stuff in for a week as a flush then put some good stuff in. :D:D

It made my diff's very quiet, yes not cheap but then again not that expensive :)


My first change to clean diff's was EP 90, changed after 200 miles to Lucas, could hear the difference immediately.

If your diffs are audible you have an impending problem. Use EP90 and turn the radio up.
 
Quiet as a mouse now, prefer listening to the V8, radio only on to drown out the missus:drama:

Think you missed the point. If your diffs are audible they have problems. The oil you put in is masking it, just like turning the radio up does. Synthetic oil has no more lubrication properties than mineral oil does it just handles heat better and therefore should not need changing as often. Hence the very extended service intervals now popular.

Also supposedly reduces drag.
 
I have found euro car parts really good for EP90, diffs's & transferbox oils...
Only £5 a litre unlke halfrauds nearer £15...
