Hello hope some one can help, I’ve just bought a Disco 2, 7 seater. I have noticed that the air suspension has been removed and coil springs with air assist fitted in replacement (think its Airlift 1000). Also the ACE has been turned off and drained.

My main concern is the legal drivability of the car. I have spoken to land rover sealers x2 and there customer care centre who can't see any issues with putting coils on a 7 seater or swapping the ACE for standard ARB. They also said it is optional to have them fitted. But some of the forums point out that it is illegal.

Any advice as I need to get the car road worthy. Should I remove the two rear seats? To put the car back to standard would cost a lot of money. Any one converted a 7 seater with standard ARB's

Sorry when posting my internet connection was locking up and when checking there was no post registered. When I finally got one post working all of them came up. I,m a newby on forums so don't know how to cancel one. If you let me know I will cancel this one

Thanks

Hi Steve, first off it's best to post in the Disco section.
My understanding is with the ACE it was not suplied as a standard fit so any series 2 Disco could run without it. If taken off you must replace the anti roll bars with the the standard ones and these also differ between air suspension and spring so make sure they are the right ones for your set up.
The air suspension was suplied on all 7 seaters. If you take it off it should not be a problem if the correct springs and shocks are fitted but as this would now be a modification to manufacturers spec. you would need to inform your insurance company, the result of this varies from one company to another.
Personaly I like the fitted air suspension. I also like the ace but took mine off, as have many others, due to the terible design and amazing prices for spare parts.

Hope that helps.
Paul.

Thank Heaby duty Like you said the ACE will be removed due to cost of repairing it. I understand that there are two different typr ARB for the rear dependent on if AIR or springs were fitted. This is were I'm struggling If the disco had air at first the I would get the ARB's for Air but now that it has been converted do I get the ARBs for springs.

Really it if if they fit the car, this is what i cant find out.

Your wright about the ACE not being standard. According to landrover my car did not have ACE fitted even do I tell them it has it

get the arb for what your running the car on so springs, all the differnce i can see is, well fook all they both look the same to me, have you had the systems disabled with the ecu?

Hi Gcoo
Yes the dealer I bought the car from disabled the ACE on the ECU and drainned the system giving me bull**** info saying it won't affect the car and is not a problem with MOT's and insurance. How nieve I was trusting a car dealer. I still need to change the belt for a pully which i have ordered. I think I can get the front bars easily but the rear ones are a problem. From what you say I would be more inclined the get the rear cars for springs. If this is the case and thay fit then there is a kit on ebay, but they state not sutable for 7 seater. Now if this is just because of insurance and not modified back prop they I could just remove the rear 2 seats and make it a 5 seater.

This could get confusing when talking to the insurance company

so your car is on springs yes get the kit for the springed td5, i have just looked under my td5 on coils and my td5 on sls and there is no differnce from what i can see at a glance in the two arbs, as for your insurance i wouldnt worry to much i know plenty of people who do away with the sls and fit coils how are you to know the car didnt come with springs from the factory ;)

this is my point Ive tried to find out through land rover franchise dealers and the main customer care centre for landrover None of them can tell the correct spec. They have even said they will give me the first owners name and I can ask him. Would insurance really go this far. As for handling it has airlift 1000 kit on it pressurised to 25 PSI which assists the springs. I'm tempted to phone extreme 4x4 and see if there kit will fit

if i were in your position i wouldnt worry thats just me, id fit the front and rear anti roll bars for a coil sprung td5, and enjoy owning a td5 :)

oh i saw you sed you ordered a tensioner did you order a belt too as the non ace is smaller diameter

yes after getting the pully i found out about the belt. Have ordered this hoping to fit this by the week end. I am hoping the pump will hold out till then. I am reading up about the extreme bars at the moment will probably call them tomorrow as they do look the part. thanks for the advice

Spoke to extreme and they sell a kit to replace the ACE, has any one fitted one of these. They don't come with instructions so wondering if they bolt onto were the old ACE bars are or do i have to drill the chassis.
Any one got a picture of the original arbs or extreme ones fitted will be a great help

Ordered the kit from Extreme 4x4 will be here during the week. talked to there tech guy he says its really easy to fit bolts onto were the old ACE was. Hope so will update when ive fitted them
