Looking to replace our now written off D2 and I'm wondering how to spot one that's had its ACE removed or disabled. I thought they all had it fitted, but have found out on here that's not the case, so those would have no hydraulic rams visible in the wheel arch.

If somebody removes the ACE, what do they usually do - leave all the pipes and rams in place and bypass the pump or something? If all that stuff is still there, is there an easy way to tell if it is a working sysytem or been disabled - apart from flinging it around a few bends and hope we go round?!

Finding car hunting a bit depressing really, looking at some of the sheds for sale is just confirming what a great car we've lost....

Hi mate
The only thing you can look for is if the ACE is there then i would say it has not been bypassed, When people replace the ACE, They put all new anti roll bars, Drive belt and remove the pump, Some times also the PS/ACE res. If it was not fitted as standard then it will only have a PS res.
Hope this helps

Ok, thanks for that. Several sellers I've spoken to have no clue what I'm asking them when I mention 'ACE', which may or may not be deliberate!

If the job is done properly, there will be newer roll bars, roll bar links, no reservoir for ACE, no pump and no pipes or valve block on the chassis.

The most difficult pipes have to be cut in half to get them out round the front suspension, and there's a couple going to the rear actuator that you can't easily get to the clip, so cut them off short.

The D2 V8 that we have just bought looks like it didn't have ACE from new.

Only the S and GS D2s left the factory without ACE, but it was available as an option on both those models at £945.00 extra.

Just a bit of info I collected when I was thinking on purchasing a D2 . :)

Our Nov 1998 build GS had it from the factory, along with HK sound system but no aircon.

I assume it was a staff car although it wasn't road registered until June 1999, Rover Cars was the first owner.

Possibly a special order? It had oil coolers for engine and manual gearbox. 7 seats were added by a previous owner.

What was the 'S' model? I thought the GS was the most basic?

Hi Peter, the range started with E then S, GS, XS, and ES an Aventurer was slotted somewhere back then.
A/C was standard fitment on GS onwards for the 2001MY. GS has always had the option of 5or 7 seats, only the XS was 5 seats only.

I didn't take much interest in D2s untill 2000 although I did drive one or two as a courtesy car and off road thanks to LR :)

the specs were and are only a guidline, Landrover registed a certain amount of Vehicles overtime, the specs were all over the place, a mix of everything, you could work out most of the landrover reg'd cars by the number plate back then, before the 51 etc plates, so the brochure is only a % of sales off the shelf, a bit like the Landrover special vehicles division! a mix of alsorts, no different to one of our customers with a X regd D1, with allsorts of spec, came from solihull, had been sort of kicking around the plant, had minimal miles,

my opinion ACE is good!
if you want a good disco mine is for sale! lol

Oops, too late - just buying one now! As it turns out, this one is a non ACE car, from factory (at least I believe so). I hadn't intended to have a non-ACE car, but having taken it for a drive I must say that if I hadn't already known, I wouldn't have guessed it was on bog standard roll bars.
Having said that, I don't believe LR put the system on there just for laughs, so I would think it's just that my 'sedate' Disco driving style doesn't warrant it! Hopefully I won't regret not having it if a bend catches me out...!

Meant to say - I wonder if me not noticing much difference is due to my old ACE equipped car being on 16" wheels, and this new one having 18" wheels, so a bit less side wall compliance?
