Hello all,

I signed up ages ago, but don't think I've posted yet. So, hello to you all.

Anyway, a muppet rammed me from behind (oo-er) in his dodge ram (how ironic). My vehicle's a 1995 Defender 90 300TDI CSW in above average condition - good chassis, bulkhead, body and mechanicals.

My ins co referred me to a claims management company, a****y assistance, who've turned out to be no assistance at all. I've had two weeks in an eyewateringly expensive hire car, and a visit from an "independent" assessor who seems to inhabit his very own fantasy world. The 3rd party insurer is trying to "total loss" the vehicle as the assessor valued it at a pitiful £4k. I've now been referred back to my ins co as the claims mgmt co seem to think they've discharged their responsibilities.

The assessor reckons:- new rear crossmember, new towbar, new rear door and new panel behind crossmember. He missed the trailer lighting socket. His estimate was £3.5k. I've done some research and reckon he's at least £2k over.

So, can I put it to the audience. What would a crossmember and a rear door cost if it was done at a decent Indy LR place? That would include supply and fit crossmember and supply, paint and fit a rear door, transferring the spare wheel carrier, wiper assembly and door catch. Also replace the trailer socket The tow bar is not damaged.

Your assistance will be very much appreciated.

Paul

you do have a issue............. but get over to the intro section ......... could stop you from getting:flame2:.

You will get some good info on how to deal with the insurance company

make them sell you it back if it goes down the right off route ............ then repair it and sell it on , everyone seems to the same

Do what Bluehaze did ............. Fix the damn thing with a new galvanized chassis and make it right not his fault a noob tired a rear entry on him

Sorry, I wasn't looking for advice on handling the ins co, just an idea of sane non-insurance-scam costs for the listed repairs.

Thanks

To paint a Scooby bonnet with NO damage cost me over £400, 4 years ago,I could have got it done for £50,but I would have a £50 paint job.If I'm not paying for it I certainly don't care what it costs as long as it's right and btw, insurance companies hold EVERYTHING against you, even "no fault" claims, regardless of costs.
If they want to write it off, great, buy it back and get a £1000 repair done, your quids in then.

For a good price and solid cross members ring pressbrake at black sheep
Read doors can be had for £240 brand new or less second hand
Painting I have no idea on and as for swapping door internals, that is a pretty easy task but if you can't do it yourself then I'm sure one of the *cough cough* helpful gents on here can give you a hand

The estimates from the repair prices are always eye wateringly expensive!
I rear ended a Citroen c2 at about 5mph at a roundabout in my mini (BMW). I had a loose number plate- C2 needed a new bumper and boot pan(must be made of fag paper and chewing gum). insurance company wanted 2.5k to fix it at an accident repair garage. She took it to an independent panel and body shop and it cost me £450 inc Vat,all genuine Citroen parts and £50 for hire car for the day.
Definitely ring a few garages for prices and also see if you can get yours re-valued, quoting auto trader adverts that your insurance company can check.
Good luck!

A council bin wagon reversed into my 1st 90, I wasn't even in the thing,

They sent an assessor out and to put it right properly as was, was going to be £1550 new front wings ect.

They gave me a cheque for the above amount and said fix it your self, I did with a new indicator and side light lense, massive cost of £4 happy days,

An assessor will usually treat the rear crossmember shunt/twist as a new chassis. Are you sure they haven't priced for that hence why they're trying to write off and such an extensive cost?

Let them right it off, buy it back, happy days, for £3.5k I could get a galvanized chassis done at an Indy and still have PLENTY of change left over for beer and new toys;););)
