Hi,

Over the last few weeks my LDR2 2002 suddenly and randomly shows ABS, TC and Hill Descending Control lights and in facts these tools won't work. If I switch off the car, remove keys from the dashboard when I then restart the car it's gone.

What can that be? Any Idea how to fix it?

It will need a new wheel hub , just need to get it tested to find out which one.Make sure you buy a OE replacement.
 
You will need to get it connected to a diagnostics machine before you can say where the problem lies.
It could be a wheel hub, but it could equally be a problem with the shuttle valve switches on the ABS.
As has already been said, search "3 amigos"
 
If the warning lights can be cancelled by cycling the ignition then it is more likely to be the SVS gremlin than a wheel hub. This can be died in a ccouple of ways and costs pennies to sort out.

Hi Dr LC 8, I,m in Oldham, if you need diagnostics, nanocom will tell you what the problem is, may be something needs replacing, but as with mine could just be historical stored faults, possibly from dirty wheel sensors, give me a shout if you need it, cheers Marko10.

+1^^^, the hub/sensor intermittent fault would keep on the ABS warning alone until the vehicle exceeds 10mph, but as said the best is to diagnose it properly first cos there are some other not so common possibilities too

Many thanks for this. I have an appointment to bring the car into my usual land rover specialist in Stockport shortly. Let's see what his diagnostic tool says.

After having observed the problem for sometimes I now realised that 9 out of 10 times this problem happens when I am off roading. Most recently, including today, switching the car on and off won't make any change. Since I went off roading today it staid on and it is not working any longer. Maybe tomorrow will be ok.

It must be one of the hub.

Does anyone know if I can clean these sensors? Any other solution?

You've probably not had your Disco connected to a diagnostic machine yet then as you were advised way back in the middle of January.

The fault could be as cheap to repair as a few quid to do the ABS shuttle valve modification or about forty quid for a new shuttle valve switch assembly.

If the diagnostic check shows up a wheel hub fault, then the only sensible thing to do is to change the hub, the ABS wheel speed sensors are built into them. You could try cleaning them but you'll still need diagnostics to show you which wheel is causing the problem, but most users will advise that you change the faulty hub first as last. Others with more knowledge than me can say whether it is actually possible to just clean them.

The TC and HDC lights aren't to my knowledge a fault item on the MoT, but the ABS light staying on is a fail.

I did bring the car to the garage to do other jobs and I asked to look into it. I am not so sure he did but the answer was that it was possibly something to do with the ABS box.

I suspect I will ultimately have to bring it to him again...

As I am changing the wheels today I was wondering if there is any way to clean the hubs...

If the diagnostics did show "something to do with the ABS box", then it sounds like the usual culprit in that area, the shuttle valve switches, or more likely the wiring inside the box from the connector plug on the side of the box to the SVS assembly. In that case it's unlikely that cleaning the wheel speed sensors will do anything at all.

The usual repair to try first before replacing the ABS modulator is to check the switch assembly for correct operation, and if you're going to remove the switch assy, then installing the wiring modification will bypass the problem area inside the ABS modulator.

If you search for "shuttle valve mod" or "svs mod" then you should find loads about the subject, both on this forum and also on the 'net generally. The mod requires a couple of feet of wire and a couple of hours.

The shuttle valve switch assembly is on the underneath of the ABS modulator but if you're careful it can be moved to a position where you can gain access without having to remove any brake fluid lines.
