hi folks. while stopping at a tee junction the abs decided to kick in and gave me a close shave with other traffic. the brake peddle stiffened and a grinding feeling . scared the life out of me. any ideas what caused this ?
thanks in advance for any input.

Wait while you try to brake on 'real' ice ... ;)

Hated my old Renault Lagunas ABS, it was pitiful in adverse conditions ...

That Paul is the only time my ABS activates, ice, snow that's it so not very often all down to very sticky road tyres. :D

Yeah. My current Disco doesn't have it, but the Laguna was good in the dry, useful in the wet but absolutely diabolical in snow and ice, absolutely atrocious!

Slid across many junctions simply because it didn't actually brake at all .. It got to the point where I'd use the missus' Corsa (at the time) if I needed to go out in snow, 'cos the series hardly ever started and was just too cold!

i was going no more than 10 mph ,dry road .the pedal actually backed off braking .??

Well a wheel lost it's grip, it can happen as road junctions are an iffy places with oil, rubber that you can't really see as any "biker" will tell you.

Junctions are awful.

I'm a biker and end up wheel sling at them a lot. 1000cc bike.

It could have been oil, diesel, anything, especially if it's wet and you run a/t or MUDs.

Hi was your abs warning light on when this happened?

If so I think this is a common fault reported elsewhere on this forum, mine does it but only if the sensor has caused an air gap abs fault to be indicated first which it does every so often, usually during a long drive or if I hit a large bump.

The only things I have not replaced are the sensor and cv joint I suspect the joint so will replace that next.

does your abs light work the test on switching on the ignition?
would be advisable to get the fault codes read.
would also help if we knew what landy your driving.....

Oops, its a 96, 300 tdi .I've had it five months and to date its had a head gasket, alternator, water pump , I'm going to do the silks shortly for not. Now abs bother but its my first disco any its a labour of love. Even if I do get a little anxious wondering wots going to go next .ha great site any everyone is pretty helpful. Ide b stuck without it Cheers people

I get excatly the same thing. Only happens when pulling up to junctions and the ABS kicks in so on you go!

Id give the ABS sensors on the front wheels a tap with a hammer (turn the wheels full lock and reach round to feel for the two wires going into the sensor) Give it a gentle tap.

ok, so to answer my question, does the abs light work its test sequence when the ignition is first switched on?

you can use this for diagnostics, dont even need to see a garage. once you learn the diagnostic procedure, (which is on lz) it will tell you whats at fault.

but it wont help at all if the little yellow abs light dont work!

I think you have a fault in the ABS system - I had a similar experience with one of our previous TDi's.

Sometimes for no logical reason on dry road, it would kick in or worse still the brake pedal would go hard and there would be little or no braking at all.

To stop this happening, I disconnected the electrical plug that feeds the the ABS pump on the passenger side of the engine bay.

With the abs unplugged the brakes worked perfectly and reliably, just without the abs function.

Might I suggest that after you've typed your message and BEFORE you post it - just re-read it.

I haven't got a clue what you are trying to say here at all??????
