I think its just brushes that are worn as its running a bit intermittent but tapping etc gets it to work. Is it a throwaway or can one get components and try a repair?

Cheers!

Anything can be repaired IF you could get the bits to do it, but as far as i know you can't.

right you were. brushes were worn and and one brush-holder had melted (they're only plastic) and allowed the brush to push itself out through the back. found a guy who was able to fashion new holder from some high-temp plastic and used a low temp soldering iron to get various other bits of deformed plastic back in shape. motor shorted so had it re-wound. pump section good as new so didn't touch it. all back together and fitted today. was a bit fiddly and time consuming but works great, lights go off in literally a couple of seconds and pump operates briefly about every 5th press of the pedal. All for less than 50 pounds including getting an off-duty LR mech to give me a hand with bleeding. sometimes the third world is great!

Forgot to add that we flushed the system. Wasn't too bad, bit dirt out the calipers and a bit of water from the rearmost bleed-valve on the modulator. Used about 4 litres of Dot4.
