So new Landy new problems.

The ABS seems to be screwwing around.

If i trail brake up to a junction or just slowing down, it will come on, just with my foot resting on the peddle, and will feel like the peddle.is stuck until pushed fairly hard then it just dives down and slams the brakes on.

Then other times, slowly rolling and coming to a stop (-5mph) it will come on again, but no brakes at all.

What the hell is going on with it???
 
do a "blink test" on the abs with a papaer clip plenty of info and fault code tables about might give you a better idear where to look.i had this put up with it for a day or to until i nearly t-boned someone.prob air gap due to wheel bearing play.you can always pull the abs fuse in engine bay brakes will work as normal but no abs and no brown trousers.
 
That was my next question.
Looked last night for the fuse. But didn't want to pull it and end up with no brakes at all. Will pull the fuse later.

Could it be that i think the f/l wheel bearing is on the way out?

Reading this post, are you saying that the brakes are applying themselves abs won't do that :confused:
 
No when applying the brakes, the abs will just randomly come on. More often than not when only using light pressure on the peddle. Nearly arse ended a mini this morning because ut locked up right at the top, repeatedly stamping the brake and a bit of handbrake slowed me down enough, but it is just annoying.
 
Had this exact same problem. Scarey s**t! Check that the ABS sensors are plugged in properly, best to take them out and reseat them yourself. Hope you get it sorted. 2 tons of Land Rover and no brakes =:screaming_bug_eye_f
 
I had this and never managed to resovle it.
It's the abs kicking in when it shouldn't which then increases your braking distance threefold.
You can take the fuse out (I did when driving around the Lake District). It triggered an engine management light, but this went out as soon as the fuse was replaced.

How do i take them out and reseat them?

Never played about with ABS, so don't know sod all about it, but what it is supposed to do
 
Removing the ABS fuse will bring the warning lamp up permanently, are your stop lamps working ok as that is the circuit that switches on the ABS ECU.
As mentioned faulty wheel sensors or bearings can give an issue.
There are some iffy tyres around that when worn don't grip as well therefore ABS will then switch in when braking.

The only time my ABS activates is in snow so once of twice a year, so still for a 17 year old disco they are not a problem feature of the vehicle, and they are maintence free which is good. :)

And any part of the braking system is not "played" with, get some one qualified to see to it.

If you disconnect valve block electrics the brakes still work fine, your insurance may not cover you be aware. Plug it back in at mot. Loads of people do this on discos as the abs system is often fecked by now.
 
There is a load of info on abs on this forum and I suspect it will not be a quick fix. I spent many hours messing about with blink codes replacing wheel bearings and swivel joints checking wiring and connectors etc but still got air gap blink code faults......like yours the abs would kick in when it shouldnt.

I eventually cured it completely by swapping the front sensors over left to right. Go figure, does not make sense.

Previous comment was right about tyres, I put the spare on after a flat and the abs kept kicking to the point the car was almost undrivable even on quiet nz back roads, I guess it was slightly different diameter to the tyre it replaced and that was enough to upset the abs.

Taken the fuse out after a scare last night.

Talking to a lad at the depo this morning. He said something about rings cracking?
 
I think that your friend means the ring that the sensor reads and are uniformly spaced and if they are cracked the distance will differ and the abs would respond accordingly. But I've only seen any damage/severe rust on rings that are left to the elements on other manufactures and when I replaced my rear hub and fitted the old abs sensor the ring was in side the hub nice and clean and lubed with oil and very unlikely to crack.
