oooooh another ****y newbie

I stopped coming in here after buying the Freelander due to the constant rubbishing and negativity. I really did think I had wasted my money and wished I had done some research before writing the cheque.

I now know that you're either here to have a bit of banter and its a bit of fun taking the p*** or for some reason there is an ingrained hatred for the Freelander on a Landrover website!!

Either way I might stick about a bit longer this time!
 
K series are notorious, banter is part of LZ.

If your really up **** creek-expect the **** to be taken along with offers of help.

That may be but I stand by the fact that our Freelander has been a good car. To quantify, it replaced a bought new Fiat Grande Punto that had around 10 trips to the dealer in 18 months - thank god it was under warranty!. Before the Punto we had a MINI Cooper that was horrendously unreliable - clutch, gearbox, radiator, torn seats and finally blown headgasket (all under warranty).

We took a risk on the Freelander - it was older, completely different car but its done us well. These have all been my wifes car but I drive the Freelander much more than the others. I've an Audi A4 and although the Freelander isnt as refined it has a lot more character, costs less to run (servicing, tyres, depreciation etc) and didnt get stuck last winter!!!
 
Hi dont bother i bought one last month with headgasket done in 12 months i ended up havin it done again and renewing all seals in the end i got shut and bought a diesel best decision ive made hope this helps
 
Why did it need new head gasket? They need a reason to fail.They aren't consumables like pads, discs and cam belts.
 
You obviously want to buy this 1.8.

The majority of people advise against it and have suggested a TD4 instead which has a MUCH better reputation.

Of course not ALL 1.8s are going to fall ill after 3 weeks, but all I need to say are 3 words: Headgasket, oil, water.

Maybe there are good ones but most are not.

Everything that Bbroomlea said would apply equally if not more to a TD4.

Everyone has their own different approach to evaluating things. I cannot agree with Bbroomlea about his statement that the Freelander isn't as refined as his Audi A4. That is NOT a given! Maybe his Freelander - but not mine.

I prefer my FL TD4 HSE to my BMW 528i for long distance cross-European journeys of 2-3 thousand miles over 5 days. I've done nearly 100K in each.

I'm not saying he is wrong - only I do not have the same opinions as he does.

Go ahead and buy the 1.8 for goodness sake. You asked for advice and you got it.

Keep us posted with how you fare with it.

I wish I hadnt posted that on Friday - I spent 8 hours yesterday either at the side of the M62 or in a flatbed truck or waiting for RAC. My car cut out on the outside lane of the motorway, loosing power steering and brake assist - not a nice experience!

Bloody Audi - wish I'd took the FL now! Fault code is injector failure and a quick google shows it as a very common and expensive fault on the 170 diesels. I could buy three headgaskets with what its going to cost if Audi dont offer any good will.

So I've changed my mind and agree with Singvogel - at least the FL gets you to where you want to go!

I'm sorry to hear of your breakdown Bbroomlea - I can empathize completely.

My BM threw a rod in Germany - luckily I spent 3 days in a lovely hotel in the Schwarzwald while a new engine was dispatched from Munchen and fitted. Miraculously the new engine had exactly the same serial number as the broken one. I saw the 2 of them side by side. The mechanic explained that this was how BMW did engines under warranty. None of the docs had to be changed as BMW engines 'do not break'. Image is everything.

Incidentally the 2 most common marques that pass me on the autobahn (I cruise at 85 - 90mph in the TD4) are Audi A4s and Smarts - they worry me, the 100mph Smarts in lane 3.

Anyhow - good luck in your negotiations with Audi NSU Auto Union AG - ask if you can send it back to Ingolstadt for refurbishing. ;)
