Yeah I'm on the lookout for a disc rear axle, it's just trying to find one at the right time when I can get a van and close enough to home.

I'd rather give it away than send it for scrap to be honest.
Oh and bugger about the fill plug. Speak to mr S884 about it, he used an 1" drive air gun to get his out :eek:
 
So not a lot going on yesterday either to be fair, sorted the first lot out for blasting.
Bulkhead, trans tunnel diaphragm, inner wings, slam panel, bulkhead-chassis mounts, seat belt mounts, battery box, set of cappings and rear tub floor supports.
Squeezed it all in brothers car, it was a slightly tight fit :eek: Took it all to a very nice man, had a good chat, unfortunately my lift was getting ****ed off or I'd have been their even longer :oops:

Anyway, before that I stripped the front axle, I already knew it needed a fair bit of work so no surprises, don't even know if I'll be using it yet but thought strip it anyway and go from their.

One nice chewed up caliper bolt, looks like someone had a go in the past, Irwin bolt removers on the impact gun got it out no bother thankfully :)

Usual trick for removing shocks, makes life so easy and doesn't make no odds about damaging them as they'll be going in the bin. Although they didn't look very old and came apart pretty easy in fairness.

And that was it. Casing could do with a new diff pan as it's all dinted, other than that the half shafts look good, cv's look good, and the diff feels remarkably good. Most other stuff would be changed as a mater of course anyhow.

Hoping to start mine sometime after Christmas, never done anything like it before but your builds and others on here are a really great source of help and guidance for people like me.
I notice this one your doing has 10 spline axles, mine has too, but I have disc brakes on the rear,, been told they are off range rover classic, just had the front rebuilt do you think changing to 24 would make a lot of difference ? also never new that alloys wont fit 10 spline, nearly bought a cheap set the other week glad I didn't now.
Will have loads of questions when I finally start mine but will be watching this one for more info in the meantime.

i've got a nice set of whale head vise grips and an impact gun for undoing shocks. but i still love my stilsons

Spanner only for the bottom, but yes the impact gun would usually be used otherwise :) Just googled them whale head vise grips too, never seen them before, but they look bloody good. Now to try and find somewhere that sells them.

Alloy wheels will fit on 10 spline axles (specifically the front) it just means you have to fit spacers (proper ones, unlike the nobber who owned mine :eek:)
Changing from 10 - 24 spline, other than the condition it doesn't really matter, and as long as yours are good I'd stick with them.
Theirs nothing wrong with 10 spline, I'm just thinking it may be better to find a half decent axle to start with as mine wants everything.
Rear axle would be going anyhow as I want disc rear, be it a 10 spline RRC one like yours or a 24 spline off a disco, really doesn't matter to me.
 
No real progress again, just been sorting through everything, doing parts lists and generally stripping all the stuff I want to send for galv.
I think I've lost it a little :oops: Been thinking of a lot more stuff than I ever thought I would, rear door I had knocking about has been stripped, an old bonnet but the inner frame is good (even better once sent for galv :D )
I don't know, maybe I'm going to do it as I've always wanted to this time, one thing I haven't stripped is the front doors, which seems a shame to leave them being the rust trap they are.
Ah, I dunno.. been thinking about changing to old split style doors and don't want to strip the push buttons for nothing.
But I guess what I want to do and what actually happens are two completely different things. We'll see how it goes, their could be a few major issues yet.

A few radius/trailing arms etc, some off of previous projects, some off this, thinking might as well just get them all done.

Old bonnet frame, skin was very dinted and battered and was worth nothing in resale value so thought I'd make use of the frame :)

ay up arron, got the fill plug out earlier. made a plasticine well and let the acid do the work for me,lol.
 
Looking good, mate. As for the doors, I've got a thing about them! It bugs me that they are such rust traps as you say. At the time of doing mine I didn't think on about getting the frames galvanised - nugget. I got mine plastic coated instead. I've put loads of Dinitrol inside the frame, but I'm still paranoid about the rust trap thing :mad: So, yesterday I bought a load of polythene from the garden centre and I've ordered some tubing off ebay. The plan is to put two panels of polythene in the door to guide water in to the door bottom (which is plastic coated and painted) Then, instead of the water dropping through the holes in to the frame and then out of the frame via the external drain holes, I'm going to connect the holes with pipes. So, hopefully, the water drops straight out of the bottom without spending any time in the frame. Over the top, perhaps. But, as I said, I've got a thing about it :oops:

Yes they are a crap design mate, water/crap sitting in the frames is a massive issue so I don't think you can be too over the top.
I've just got to decide if I want push button or lift handle doors, then they can go for blasting etc.. Decisions decisions...
 
So.. the bulkhead came back from blasting on Thursday, and it was even dropped off for me :) Cheers again.
Surprisingly no other nasty's where found, just the stuff I already new about. Pair of footwells, pair of feet and the top corners need a good fettle, both inside and out.
Couldn't get any replacement panels here for the weekend, so ordered from yrm this evening, bloody £180 :eek: Repair panels seem cheap until you add them all to your basket, add shipping and the vat. But it's good stuff, it just needs to hurry up and get here.

Made a start removing the footwells, not a job I've ever done before, just lots and lots of spot welds to drill out.
And also started scraping all the old seem sealer off as blasting doesn't, comes off pretty easy if a little time consuming. Hoping for some good progress next weekend on the bulkhead, or here's to hoping anyway.

Did you keep the vent mesh? Unfortunately, mine went with the old one when it was taken for part exchange. Pretty sure it was tack welded in though! I'll need to sort something or risk getting knocked out by a blackbird coming through at 50mph :)

Evening marra. I remember you saying that about yours. I'm pretty sure mine was tack welded in. I'm off to see if any of my pictures can magnify clearly to show.:)
I'd like to think if mine had been riveted I would have drilled them out straight away. I'm of an age though that the old memory sometimes isn't as clear as I would like o_O

No worries, doesn't matter to me., I think the later bulkheads must have gone to tack welded ones, I know the ones on my td5 bulkhead was the same.
I've tried looking at the pictures of your new bulkhead on your thread and can't make it out 100% But if their is little holes near the vents on the bit that is raised you could fit the rivet on type as it should have for the age of bulkhead.
Let me know if it has as I may have a spare set you can have.
 
So the bulkhead continues, the panels turned up early in the week from yrm, first impressions are they look pretty good, and postage was pretty damn quick.

The old panel was cut out and the new one clamped in place so it could be marked where to cut for the extended bit of the footwell.

I did get the new one welded in along with the new foot, but I forgot to take pictures :oops:
Got the other side stripped and cut out ready for the new one.
But by god it's taking a long time. Starting to think it'd have been easier to buy a better bulkhead to start with. Probably because I've never replaced footwells either, but it'll get their in the end.
The fit of the footwells is pretty good on the whole and the quality seem good, It's good that they come it 2 pieces, but the one annoying thing is that the 2 don't fit together perfectly, i.e when the side bit is pushed into the footwell it'self they don't sit together flush and is a gap in places, managed to clamp/hammer them together pretty good, but not perfect, maybe I'm just being a picky **** :oops:

Also bought a pair of axles off ebay, was hoping to collect them this weekend, but apparently he isn't about :rolleyes:
Don't know if they're going to be any better than I've got, only really wanted the rear to give me rear discs, but they're cheap enough and if the front is any better than mine it's a bonus.
