Hey guy's,

Just had an AA vehicle inspection done on a possible new purchase ('99 defender 90 TD5) every thing came back fairly ok except for the the following:

Slight Oil leak around Sump Gasket Area.
Oil Leak around the Gear box to Engine Joining Area.
Oil Leak to the rear area of the transfer box.

I know they say it's impossible to get a defender that doesn't leak, but are these the standard leaky points? Is it serious or is it easy to get fixed? Or should I just stay well away?

Cheers for any help you can give!

Hey guy's,

Slight Oil leak around Sump Gasket Area.
Oil Leak around the Gear box to Engine Joining Area.
Oil Leak to the rear area of the transfer box.

Sump don't have a gasket normally so it will mark it's territory as a amtter of course.
There is a drain hole on gearbox to allow oil to drip out. You should plug this when going wading, but remove it to let oil drip out afterwards or it shags your clutch.
Never seen an LT230 yet that don't sweat a little ;)

99 td5, that's abt pretty much as good as it gets.

if the vehicle has seen normal use, then you're ok.

i've a 02 defender which doesn't leak oil. (oh yes, i've checked, there's oil the the boxes, no worries) hence the driveway is spotless.

All Landrovers ever made leak oil from these places sooner or later !!! Try not to think of it as a leak, more as the beast marking its territory !!!
