sorry St, must have crossed.

hmmmm. agreed..... this does not sound good..

Doesnt sound great, but it has done it now for the 18months i have had the car and bar the vibration I had in January, fingers tightly crossed, she seems OK so far!

Only happens when warm due to the oil being thinner offering less resistance to movement?
Maybe do an oil test?
Sorry, any other comment I can give is not a +ve one..

best of luck..

When I drained and fitted a new filter earlier this year....and then a couple of months ago when I did my Gearbox Oil Cooler...the fluid looked fine and the sump magnets were relatively clean looking (for tens years old) - see my How To's in the How To section for photos.

Never have found any reason for it as yet....it is as if when the 'box changes down a gear when you apply the brakes or the Lock Up Clutch disengages its clunks....

I have no vibration, judder, whine or other noises...just this clunk when you first apply the brakes ...

Do the brake pads 'float' on these

Just a thought although I have been up the pub for 5 hours :D

Kind of....

The piston housing is held on the caliper bracket using slide pins to allow the piston housing to self centre to the disc and is retained using a spring.

The pads fit in the caliper bracket loose and the piston housing then fits over the top of the pads.

i am glad i asked as my brakes seem to squeal a bit when i reverse which probably mean they could do with a bit of freeing up.
i think the reason i brought it up was i remember having a car years ago that used to clunk when i put the brakes on.
it was most likely a mk1 escort and something was probably about to fall off or it was a mk3 which i think used to have floating calipers.

Thinking back, it did start when I did the brake pads....but since then I have had the wheels off for other jobs and not noticed anything amiss...and the sound is more central to the car, from the Gearbox area

Not found the cause yet after 18 months....maybe if I stripped the box I could find the cause, but feck that while it seems to be behaving itself!

driveshaft or UJ or loose carrier bearing on the driveshaft...

the pads dont have to go in a certain way round do they, or didnt miss the holes with one of the pins allowing the pad to rotate slightly when the brakes are applied, i am just guessing, its one of the few parts i havent taken apart yet.

i would check EVERYTHING before taken the box apart again unless you got yourself a loony with a month on his hands;)

i subscribed to the site below for a year which gives access to all the land rover TSB's amongst other things for one vehicle

Will have to get it up on a Ramp and look at those parts as I have yet to check them out.

Brakes together correctly - I always make sure of that, two systems I don't feck about with and double/triple check my work - Brakes and Steering, as these two systems are safety critical.

The brakes are dead simple to do...

Lever off retaining spring
Remove Dust covers and Calliper Slide bolts (7mm Allen key)
Loosen Bleed nipple and push pads away from disc, maintain pressure on pads and do up nipple (to prevent it sucking air into system)
Lift Calliper Piston housing off the bracket
Remove Pads from Piston and bracket
Replace Wear sensor
Replace pads
Refit Calliper Piston Housing
Refit Slide Pins and dust covers
Refit Retaining Spring.

Can be done in 10 minutes!

Dead simple!

St....I would suggest you simply do a safety inspection and so long as this is all well, let it run as you have.
Put some more away each month to get ready...
best wishes..

Cheers Don...yep will get underneath and have a good check over and also recheck the brakes - wouldn't go a miss...

Gotta love a Range Rover!

cheers for the info Saint, it wont be long before its brake time for me i'm sure.

what we could do with is a 4 wheel rolling road ramp so we can lay underneath and look at all the bits spinning around to see where noises come from, maybe 4 axles stands and lay underneath..............

ok to cover myself, that was a joke, nobody try this, but Darwin did have point..
