My question is this, I have a series 2 with a series 3 military chassis and axles. I was told they are both Salisbury types but how do you tell easily.
I thought that salisbury shafts were 24 spline but is that at both ends so if I look at the drive member end if its got 10 splines its rover and 24 spline salisbury?
I did a search but got a lot of info but what I want is a straight forward answer and not too much technical stuff as it'll go straight over my head:(
Oh I should say the front diff case is rounded so looks rover.

Salisbury axles have bolt on covers,
All salisbury axles, series and defender have the same splines in the diff.

On a Salisbury the dif cover is bolted on and the dif is assembled through the casing, on a Rover axle the cover is welded on and the diff is assembled from the drive side with a round joint face.

Ok thanks, was it usual to just put the heavy duty diff on the rear and a normal rover one on the front?

Just taken the front axle to bits for rebuilding and was surprised to see a 24 spline drive member when I took off the hub cap. Is this 24 spline at the drive and 10 spline at the diff? I don't intend taking out the shafts to have a look but would be interested to know if this is just a military setup or did all 109's have 24 spline drives with normal 10 spline diffs?
Cheers

diff will be 24 spline too, its just std salisbury front or rear, they were only fitted on the front on special vehicles ie utilities or mod

Mine is a rover front diff, its got an R cast into it and its round, so is that a standard 10 spline diff with 24 drive?

I think the chassis is mid 70's everything on it is imperial, its been used to replace the chassis on my series 2 109 years ago by the looks of it.
Reckon I might have to slide one of the swivels off and have a look just to satisfy myself.

if its a rover series axle it will be 10 spline diff
