G'day all,

Been a very long time since I last frequented these fora. We are looking at buying a 2004 D2 Td5 ... before we jump, I'd very much like to hear a general consensus from owners what their own thoughts are on the 04 D2. What can we generally expect from this truck in terms of performance and reliability? What's the pro's and cons with this unit?

I am a new owner to Landrovers too and was wondering the same things when i bought mine,

Performance is poor but then a 2.5 diesel pulling a 2 ton aerodynamic brick is never going to be speedy, once it's going though it's a steady motor and pulls well, brilliant for towing. Having said that, there is tuning goodies to be had to help the driveability of the vehicle, EGR removals, de-cats, centre box removals, up-rated intercoolers, ecu tuning etc ...
Reliability i am finding is shocking, niggly faults here and there and when you think everythings fine 'ping' another warning light on the dash, another 'clunk' on the steering/suspension.

Overall - Not the worst trucks going but not the best,

Don't know how old your car is Ian, but mine is getting on 10yrs old, looks and runs like new and does everything i ask of it, winter or summer. I don't agree with you on that one, unless you have went and bought someone elses uncared for dog. Maintenance is the key here. Look after it, and it will look after you. Great cars and you're in the wrong place if you want to knock them as far as i,m concerned.
 
Gotta go with meego on that one. Mine is 8 years old, used everyday (all day) in the most harsh semi desert conditions. Looks and drives like new. Maintained properly, polised with Auto Glym and gets a hosepipe on it once a week. Had a renault Kangoo 4X4 before this from new, fell apart after 5 years, just couldnt hack it.
 
I have a 04 TD5 and love it, it has th eodd issue here and there but let me echo others commnents maintance is key, look after her and she will look after you.

I have had airboag probs bu thye should be replaced every 5 years not done my previous owner but if they are changed every 5 years perfect.

The truck will go any where, do anything, pull anything and alwasy leave you with a smile on your face.
 
Got my 53 plate XS 6 days ago and done 750 miles already. Great car so long as you don't mind settling for life in the slow lane. Pulls in any gear from 30mph like a train and doesn't miss a beat - although time will tell...

I've come to the conclusion that it won't match my old Beemer on build quality, efficient speed or road holding but it certainly puts a smile on my face every time I get in. And there's nothing wrong with actually hearing a machine work!;)

For the age and miles on the car it's still a good example, ive got a 2001 registered GS. I am a BIG fanny for cars, serviced all the time and everything taken to bits and greased, cleaned and serviced correctly. I am a mechanic by trade so i my truck get what it needs. I know maintenance is the key, ive got loads left to do that most on here probably wouldnt bother doing unless faults/problems arose but hey ho!

As for the last comment, how am i in the wrong place if i want to hold critism. The guy asked for answers so that was mine, Can you not accept constructive critism ? Also, if your read my post, i had plenty positive things in there to say about them. I think mine is upto the job of what i want it for, a pure workhorse/towing vehicle for my L200 and the school runner:D
 
No probs mate. Your post was constructive, up to the shocking reliability bit. I agree with most of what you say. Except that.
And you can't blame a Landy lover, on a forum for Landy lovers, for stickin up for them, surely not. Nae hard feelins a hope.:D
 
Thanks to all for the replies so far, it is great to get current feed back from owners in the moment. Here is a question for all ...

We have found a 99 Disco II V8/LPG that has low K's looks to be in pretty good nick but the bloke says it has the 3 Amigo's as an intermittent thing. I am very new to this Amigo's thing but have seen a few posts here that suggest it is an easy fix. Should the 3 Amigo's be any kind of barrier to purchase given that everything else on this truck is right for our requirements? Is it an easy fix or big trouble?

Bloke reckons there was a major repair job done some months ago having to do with a steering leak ... does this sound about right for a Disco II in terms of a trouble spot?

No hard feeling by me, that what i personally think of them. I do however understand a higher miler truck will require abit more work to get upto a 'minter' which i am well on my way to sorting out.

The 3 amigo's are the ABS/TC/Downhill descent light. I have got these on my dash board and after inspection i have a faulty wheel bearing. Check the wheel bearing for play, noise etc.. as a wheel bearing off could put them 3 lights on.

The bloke mentioned that it was likely a wheel bearing censor ... question being, are the 3 Amigo's an easy sort out or do they spell trouble as a rule? Are the 3 Amigo's mean a fail at Rego/MOT?
