Hi Guys (and Girls),

I've just got myself a 95' disco 300 tdi. She starts first time with hardly any smoke but has a tapping noise.

The tapping seems to get quicker with the acceleration., and is rather like when I was a kid and put a plastic drinks cartan in the back wheel of a bmx so It would sound like a motor bike or like the sound that is made from putting a sheet of paper into a room fan.

Don't know if its connected - but I can bearly hear the Turbo 'hiss' on acceleration either.

At first I thought the Turbo had gone, because shes a bit pants on the pull away and accelerating uphill - she seems to struggle to make the next gear - which also made me dought the Auto box.

Have you guys got any ideas?

PS - I also noticed that the main belt I can see has lots of little spits over it - is this normal - or is this a sign of needing a change. Its the belt that sits just behind the fan.

Hope you can help.. Coz I love it..

No, it's normal or acceptable. Anyone caught spitting in my engine bay would be given a damn good thrashing ;) ;) :D

I bet he (the biglad) misses his pint.
jwalron If u have a 'serpentine' belt, thats the long belt that drives all the pullys, well it does on a petrol, then LR recommend changing every 5 years.
I just changed mine after 10 years there was loads of small splits on the rib side but none on the important flat side so i'm keeping the old one as a spare.

Tapping comes from tappets that need adjusting :)

Could be tappets, could be any number of things really. Try putting you hand over the injectors with the engine running the copper washers can blow giving a tapping type noise, you'll feel it blowing. A change of filters and an intercooler clean will probably make a big difference.

Sounds like it needs a complete service - oils, filters, tappets etc, then see how it runs / sounds.
Another cause of tapping is the vacuum pump - about £80 for a new one.

Hi

I had all sorts of problems with my 300Tdi 1994 model a short time ago. One of them was getting this mind bending ticking from he engine when I accelerated. However, I was getting a fair amount of smoke from my exhaust as well. I also couldn't hear the turbo which concerned me.

I was told by the guy I bought it from that the timing belt had only been done 5000 miles prior to me buying it, but because of the tapping and smoke and some great advice from others on this forum I decided to have it looked at. Thank god I did because it turned out to be a real nightmare. It took a whole day to get the crankshaft pulley off and once off and into the timing case it was discovered that the tensioner pulley had been replaced by a pulley that wasn't even a Landrover part and the bolt that should have secured it was missing all together. This had allowed the timing to slip by 2 teeth. I'm told that had it slipped to a third tooth the engine would have suffered damage.

Sorry to be long winded about this, but my first question to you would be how long ago is it since your timing belt was replaced?

Now mine has been done I have got rid of the tapping noise, the turbo is very evident, I can hear it whistling every time I touch the throttle, the smoke from the exhaust has stopped, it starts 1st time every time and on a decent run I'm getting a minimum 35 to the gallon and somewhere between 28 and 30 knocking round at home.

I have also recently changed my serpentine belt that had thousands of splits on it. I think this can only point to the fact it is pretty old.

If you do a search on "White smoke" you will see my original thread on my problems.

Think youve got same model as me only mines a 94.They are underpowered the early ones were only 112 bhp Later they changed them to the edc model and made them 120 bhp to compensate for the power loss through torque converter. You will soon get used to old Transit vans overtaking you on the hills. :D

I have an auto as well and have done a couple of mods on her to improve things significantly, for very low cost.

Assuming that you have changed all the oils and filters (especially the air filter), check to see if you have an EGR valve and a catalytic converter. New filter kits available from these people at very reasonable prices: Paddock Spares - Land Rover, Range Rover Parts & Accessories - Discovery, Defender and Freelander.

The EGR valve is on the rhs of the engine as you look in the engine bay and is a circular device bolted onto the exhaust manifold. If you have one it needs removing or at least blanking off because it's just rubbish. Do a search on EGR removal, or similar.

The cat in the exhaust pipe isn't really a cat at all it's more of a filter really and after a while it just gets bung-up. It is not needed for passing the mot and you will find that if you replace it with a non cat downpipe like this: ESR2297 Front Pipe - 90 300TDI without Cat (1995-1997), it will pick up much quicker !!!

Hope that helps

Cheers
Dave

Thanks for the guidence guys. I've ordered my Filter kit.

I'm about to get some oils - any guidence available on whats best. I don't want to spend silly money on oils - but is std stuff from holfords ok?

If it is the injectors or tappets: is this somthing a non-spanner head like me can do. I'm mechanicly minded, but have never taken the plundge (or should I say, had the balls) to do my own work.

I've heard that gasket failure can cause tapping aswell - But have no idea how you know if this is happening.. nether do I know how you know if the Turbo's gone or on the way out and how you tell if the auto box is slipping (if they do.. dounno.)

I'm ashamed to say I don't know these things, but I plan to... gues I'll learn along the way.

Thats the Lift pump just yesterday did mine same noise same year, easy peasey replacment, just make sure you put on a new gasket, it helps so much and ive just done the full monty filters etc so she now actually moves in a forward motion slightly faster than a snail and can go uphills!!!!!:D

OK - I think I'm about ready to actually do somthing about this. I'm stuck between changing out either the Vacuum pump or the Lift pump.

Those who help without the video said Vacuum pump - but those with the benefit of video said Lift pump... so It's (knowing my luck) either - but got to start somplace.

So, can any 1 advice on how much a garage would charge for:

1) Vacuum pump (without parts)
2) Lft pump (again without Parts)

I'd do it myself, but I'm feeling a bit of a wimp (plus would need to buy tools anyway). I don't fancy not being able to get the pump back on or have trouble with TDC etc... read quite a lot of posts with people having priblemswith getting these things back on - and I don't think any 1 is close to me to 'lend a hand'. Would give to garage if labour costs where ok for piece of mind.

Either pump can be changed within an hour.
Try the lift pump first - they're quite cheap and often tired by that age / mileage anyway.

I see a lot of talk about hearing turbo's
whats this all about then cos iv'e had my landy disco 1998 for 3 years now and i never heard my turbo make any noise
