Hi All

I am the owner of a Landrover Defender TD5 90 2000 which has an issue that 4 mechanics have been unable to resolve. Can anyone here solve the mystery?
The fun began when she failed her MOT due to a few rust issues. Her fuel tank had to be removed to do the job. She drove home fine but refused to fire up again as if she was not getting enough fuel. To each garage I have asked the same question: 'could there be a connection between returning the fuel tank and the engine cutting out?'

Garage 1:
The ECU loom was contaminated with oil - cleaned, reconnected, power supplies checked and OK. No output detected to injectors. ECU oil contamination so sent for refurbishment. No fault found so refitted.
Insufficient pressure to pump enough fuel to injectors - New pump, filter, injector seals and injector wiring harness fitted. - Pressure fine - still non start.
Specialist brought in - poor connections in wiring loom to fuel system found and cleaned, wiring to glow plug and poor earths repaired.
Wiring issues had caused loss of synchronisation and communication between alarm and engine ECU's - system reset and synchronised - engine now starting.
Faulty battery replaced and engine oil and filter changed as fuel contamination present due to injector seals/cranking.

2 weeks later, malfunction warning light comes on and engine cuts out whilst driving

Garage 2
After a week's rest in their forecourt, engine starts fine, they move it around a few times and call me to collect.

5 mins after collection, malfunction light and engine cuts out whilst driving.

Garage 3 - Specialist Landrover Garage
Found mass airflow sensor not operating correctly and engine relay corroded internally - both replaced

1 week later, malfunction light and engine cuts out and restarts whilst driving.

Garage 4
Above work checked and vehicle road tested - did not cut out

30mins of driving later, malfunction light and engine cuts out and restarts whilst driving. Drove 30mph home which reduced cutting out. Garage 4 has agreed to remove fuel tank and answer my query.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks

Greetings and welcome. The "Defender wave" is a great thing (though I'll wave at Series too), makes my day. :)
Hope you get it sorted soon. Window down and elbow out weather coming..

I currently dislike my landrover greatly

Yeah well, get used to that feeling, I've had a love hate relationship with mine for the last 7yrs LOL to the point where I was on the verge of scraping it I was so sick and tired of spending endless amounts of cash and at the time it seemed as though I wasn't getting anywhere with it at all.

Possible thoughts, dodgy crank sensor , dodgy fuel , fuel filters , injector wires came loose on mine but still ran or maybe she just dun like the way you drive :)

Thanks for that and given she is the most alive creature (Daisy) I've ever driven it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if she's taken umbrage over something.

So much for simple mechanics being simple - got that soooo wrong. Maybe I should get a horse instead.

A sad conclusion to the tale to a year in the life of my Landrover Defender

Garage 5 (recommended by someone in the know) agreed to remove the fuel tank and found massive bio fuel contamination from supermarket fuel, growing in and on the sides of the tank as well as clogging the fuel filters. 10 days later my car was stolen, used in a robbery and left completely burnt out. Insurance fun now begins.

Thanks to everyone for all their tips.

Chin up and hurry back to the fold when your insurance is resolved. The fellow wavers will be waiting.

That is just so unfair:(

Hope your insurance company come good and you buy again to stay in the family:)

What a shame,

If you hadn't got it fixed maybe they would have been caught when they broke down part way through their crime .

Same happened to me, but not burned just returned a scrapper :(
Didn’t have a vehicle for months until I fell in love with a P38. Heartbreaking at the time I’m better off in every way with my new landy. Don’t let it dishearten you ;)
