Good evening all, thanks for taking the time to read my post,
Just this evening, my landrover Freelander td4 (2006) HSE automatic has started to make an awful noise when turning the fan heater on, and also the same noise when turning right (like a loud clicking type noise)- it has never done this before, does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Sounds like it might be a dodgy relay, but I really dont know much about that vehicle. Sure the freebie boys will know!

does the vehicle have air-con. ?
if ' yes ' .. is the cabin heater airflow set to ' windscreen de-mist ' ..
if so .. does the noise still occur when airflow to footwell / dash-vents is selected ?

if that's a ' yes ' .. ' yes ' .. and a ' no ' ....
it Could point to the air-con. pump

the same noise happening when steering as well ..
Might point to the engine aux. belt system and it's associated pulleys and tensioners ..

your clicking when turning right may well be cv joint as you are turning right it will be coming from the left hand one.
 
We've got an 06 HSE Freelander auto too, when ours did this it turned out to be the crankshaft pulley. Putting the fans on puts more load on the alternator, works the belts harder. In the end it ended up soundling like a hedge cutter. How may miles has yours done? Our pulley went at around 80,000. Put the heater on and stand outside the car, if it sounds like the racket is coming fom the driver's side wheel arch then it will be the pulley.

As teddywood1 said, the clicking when turning will probably be a CV joint.
 
Thank you all for your help, it sounds like a jack hammer! It does disappear as soon as I accelerate and only when idle, turning the steering wheel both ways or putting the heating on or air con - I will have the crankshaft looked at - is it a big job? I mean is it going to cost a lot,

Hello Angela,

No probs. It is a bit of a job. It needs doing though as if it s the crankshaft pulley it will cause serious engine damage if you leave it. The problem is caused by a rubber damper inside the pulley slipping against the metal outer rim where the belt goes. The noise will go when you rev it as you have found. If you leave it the damper wont absorb vibrations to the crank shaft and it will bend / fail.

We had ours done early last year as it did exactly what yours is doing. Its a bit of a pig of a job as you have to go in through the front wheel arch and undo a very tight bolt / remove the belts. The new one has to be properly fitted with the bolt and the correct torque. Have a search on here for TD4 Crankshaft Pulley - there's loads of information about it.

Ours cost £494 (including parts, labour and VAT) to get done.

Thank you, the noise did disappear for 20 seconds or so earlier when we drive over a speed hump (just trying to have a small drive to see if we could hear anything else)

Really is bizzare, when idle, turn left or right or really loud when we try put the fan heater on, I'm not driving it, it happened so quickly was fine in the morning and then bam in the afternoon, no warning! Looks like I will have to take it to the garage then - £494 is not what I wanted to hear lol, thank you so much

No probs. You'll hear it when you turn left or right as your working the power steering which puts more load on the engine / alternator so makes the noise worse.

It is a bit of a pricey job, but not doing it will cost loads more.

Its a quite a common fault with the TD4.

I've just been searching in here as suggested, I see it's a common fault, I love the car and the fact that this is the first thing to be wrong with it in almost 9 years it's worth the money, I love my landrovers!
I will take it to a garage and suggest looking at that and get them to confirm before doing it, really appreciate your help

No probs at all. If you have a look in the engine bay next to the drivers side wheel arch you'll see the pulley just inside a splash plate. If you can see "shinny" bits on it next to the belt or metalic dust near it - then its definately had it.

It was the first major thing that went on ours too. Can't fault it otherwise.

I just typed in on you tube and that is my noise! In a way so glad as at least I know what it is now, I will refrain from driving it and phone around some garages tomorrow - thanks for pointing me in the right direction :)
