That can be just a belt. I had a ****ty Dayco one make that noise on my V8 DIsco 1. it can also be an idler or bearing, as mentioned above.

Same here, the outer side of the Dayco was quite smooth and gave no grip on one of the pulleys even though it was brand new, Put a genuine one on which had a noticeably more grippy outside and immediate cure.

Thanks for all the replies. I'd be happy to be that but my belt is genuine and less than 2 years old . I removed it and spinned the pulleys by hand as i could and nothing obvious, i'll replace the tensioner first which is the original 22 years old one and the belt as i have another genuine for spare to rule these out and if no joy i'll remove the compressor pulley cos at this point seems the most suspect to me.

Dont rule out the harmonic balancer on the crank. That can produce a marble in a tin noise, and queak on start/stopping the engine. Replaced my lads a month or two ago, and the awful rattle he had went. Cheap idler pulleys, and tensioners dont last very long before they start making noises, so I agree genuine all the way... I have never taken apart an AC pulley, so cant comment on faults with that....

Hi, i ruled out the crank damper cos it's a prox 4 years old genuine and applied pressure on it with a rubber hammer while the belt was off without any change in it's behaviour ... i ordered a Lisle 52500 stethoscope which will arrive tomorrow then i'll continue with the troubleshooting

Longshot maybe, but have you put a straight edge across all pulleys to see if any are out of alignment with any other?
I did this once on my D1 300tdi and found an idler out of whack.
Judicious placement of a washer under the mounting before retightening put it straight.
No more noise. :):):)
(A bodge I know, but kept it going till i could get another one.);)

HI, after i ruled out the compressor, all the pumps and alternator with my new stethoscope i replaced the tensioner and belt and the problem was still there, so in my desperation i gave a spin with my hand as hard as i could to thhe viscous fan pulley and that's how it sounds on it's own(set the volume to max) https://youtube.com/shorts/zXn4heELTdg?feature=share  ... i'll order a bearing but that's a job fo the new year which i wish you all to be a happy and prosperous one

P.S. do you guys think it's risky to drive it this way some short trips untill i fix it ?

Can you move the pulley up and down? My last td5 the bearing was shot and I could move it up and down but it didn't make a noise....

That's the guide i'll follow for sure
Once you have the dimensions of the bearing you can get one from any place selling bearings. I had to do this recently when I needed some for an old lawnmower.
They were very cheap and did the job.
I'd trust the Timken one and it isn't over priced.
I'm watching this thread very closely as my fan is waggling a bit! No noise though, weirdly.
Meanwhile you could just remove the fan and run it carefully, using the Air-con fan(s) if necessary.
My D1 has run for ages with no viscous fan, just the aircon one(s) (dunno how many there are, never checked) and another electric one I fitted that I can switch on, which I only ever needed to use twice and that was in very hot weather in France.

That's the one I used when I changed mine. It took a few tries and you need to be very quick as the bearing steel expands quickly once it comes into contact with the heated housing. I'd say SKF is a must for this application. If you don't have play, I don't see why you can't keep using your vehicle for short trips.

I suspect he either has a couple of balls gone out of round or else the grease has gone dry or simple gone!! Thus noise but no wiggle.
i think mine still has quite a bit of grease but all the balls or their retaining rings have worn.
Anuyway, we both need to do the job.
I have to confess I have put mine off for quite a while now so am taking a bit of a risk!! Drove all the way back from France towing the trailer with a C3 on it then ran around a bit then this Xmas went to the Dales and back with it.
So I think SF will be safe for a little while!!;)

Thanks guys, i'll drive it with the fan off untill i fix it and as i have additional gauge if i dont like the temps i'll activate the electric fan or fit it back if needed but i'll replace the bearing ASAP

Thanks for the tip. I already found the bearing at a local supplier today, same specs like the genuine made by Koyo, the equivalent of about £20, i hope i'll get the time this week to replace it, the only problem is that i dont have a press to remove/refit from/to the shaft, only a big bench vice in my garage, if i can't manage with the vice and a big hammer i'll go to a place near me where they can do that cos i'm sure i can refit it to the engine, for that i have the proper tools some stubordness and brute force :D

Try with the big bench vice first. Best of luck.
